What is a weight engineer?

A Weight Engineer is responsible for managing the weight and balance of structures, vehicles, or aircraft to ensure optimal performance and safety. They analyze weight distribution, track mass properties throughout a project, and collaborate with design and engineering teams to meet specified weight targets. This role is crucial in industries like aerospace, automotive, and shipbuilding, where weight efficiency impacts fuel consumption, stability, and overall functionality.

What does a weight engineer do?

As a Weight Engineer, your daily responsibilities often include monitoring and analyzing the mass properties of components, coordinating with design and manufacturing teams to ensure weight targets are achieved, and maintaining detailed records of weight estimates and changes throughout the product lifecycle. You may also conduct weight audits, run simulations, prepare technical reports, and participate in design reviews to address any weight-related challenges. Collaboration with departments such as structural engineering, systems engineering, and quality assurance is common to ensure the final product meets all performance and safety standards. This dynamic role requires balancing technical tasks with active teamwork and problem-solving.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weight engineer?

To thrive as a Weight Engineer, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, mathematics, and physics, often supported by a degree in aerospace, mechanical, or automotive engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, weight tracking tools, and mass property analysis systems like CATIA or NX is highly valuable, along with any relevant professional certifications such as Six Sigma. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help Weight Engineers excel in cross-functional teams and complex projects. These technical and interpersonal skills are crucial for ensuring products meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements by effectively managing and optimizing weight throughout the design and manufacturing processes.

Job description

Senior Naval Architect / Senior Engineer
Position Type: Full-Time
Location: Shipyard / Marine Engineering Operations
Designation: Cognizant Engineer

Position Summary
We are seeking a versatile and highly skilled Senior Naval Architect / Senior Engineer to lead design, analysis, and validation efforts across critical naval architecture disciplines—including Structural Analysis, Intact & Damaged Stability, and Weight Engineering/Management.

Primary Discipline Focus Areas
Candidates will support one or more of the following technical functions:
  • Weight Engineering: Perform strategic analysis, weight estimation, and validation; manage large weight databases; and track mass properties from conceptual design through physical completion.
  • Structural Naval Architecture: Conduct global and local structural analyses (Full Ship FEA, global vibration analysis, longitudinal strength assessment, and foundation design) ensuring full compliance with Classification Society, US Navy, and Owner requirements.
  • Stability Naval Architecture: Perform intact and damaged stability calculations, calculate freeboard and tonnage, model watertight boundaries, resolve cross/progressive flooding scenarios, and produce Trim & Stability Booklets, capacity plans, and tank tables.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design, Analysis & Checking
  • Execute complex engineering calculations, design studies, proposals, diagrams, BOMs, purchase specifications, test memos, and pre-contract design packages.
  • Serve as a Cognizant Engineer and design checker, ensuring all work products conform to strict schedule, budget, and quality standards.
  • Use CAD/CAM software and specialized naval architecture analysis tools to develop and refine ship systems and structures.
  • Interpret and apply Regulatory Body Rules (ABS, Coast Guard), US Navy Specifications, Load Line rules, and industry standards.
Project Execution & Shipyard Operations
  • Actively support major shipyard evolutions and field trials, including inclining experiments, deadweight surveys, vibration/noise trials, ship launches, undockings, shaft alignment surveys, and Sea Trials.
  • Review vendor proposals, technical drawings, and specifications for regulatory and contractual compliance.
  • Prepare scopes for change orders, technical evaluations, and engineering cost/man-hour estimates.
  • Guide Design Transition teams to ensure smooth handoffs between engineering phases and production.
Communication & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Interface effectively with internal engineering divisions, production teams, external customers, vessel owners, vendors, and regulatory bodies.
  • Control scope creep, identify technical risks early, and facilitate problem resolution using established industry methods.
  • Prepare and deliver clear technical presentations, reports, and official engineering correspondence.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement
  • Mentor and provide daily technical guidance to junior engineers and design staff.
  • Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing safety, improving product quality, reducing cycle time, and lowering costs.
Qualifications & Experience
Basic Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related Applied Sciences discipline.
  • Experience: Minimum of 4 to 5 years of practical experience in marine engineering design, with at least 3 years focused on specific naval architecture/structural/weight disciplines. Operational, production, or shipyard test experience is highly valued.
  • Technical Proficiency:
    • Proven experience with CAD/CAM platforms and naval architecture analysis software.
    • Thorough familiarity with shipboard systems, equipment, structural layouts, volume/buoyancy principles, and weight management databases.
    • Conversant with regulatory body rules (ABS, USCG, NAVSEA, SOLAS/IMO).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) License or an advanced engineering degree.
  • Experience in Full Ship Finite Element Analysis (FEA), global vibration, or advanced hydrostatics modeling.
Core Competencies
  • Effective decision-maker capable of driving tasks forward with minimal oversight.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Accountable, flexible, and committed to a collaborative team environment.
Physical Demands & Work Environment
This role requires working in both office and active shipyard industrial environments:
  • Office Setting: Prolonged sitting/standing at a computer workstation, communicating via online/phone tools, and utilizing standard software applications.
  • Industrial & Shipboard Setting:
    • Must be able to safely navigate and traverse the shipyard, construction areas, warehouses, piers, and active vessels.
    • Requires transit over uneven surfaces, climbing/descending stairs, ladders, and scaffolding, working at heights, and accessing tight, confined, or congested spaces (including manholes).
    • Exposure to outdoor weather extremes (heat, cold, precipitation), loud industrial noise (hammering, sirens, machinery), dust, fumes, and hazardous materials.
    • Must be physically capable of wearing all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and maintaining full situational awareness to comply with safety protocols.
