Weekend Working involves working primarily on weekends, often with flexible hours during weekdays, suitable for roles in retail, hospitality, or healthcare. Night Shift Workers operate during overnight hours, essential in industries requiring 24/7 operations. Both roles may share similar environments but differ mainly in scheduling and sometimes credential requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in weekend working roles, and why are they important?

To thrive in weekend working roles, you need reliability, time management, and a strong work ethic, with any required job-specific qualifications depending on the industry. Familiarity with scheduling systems or point-of-sale software may be necessary, especially in retail, hospitality, or healthcare. Flexibility, communication, and teamwork are important soft skills for adapting to varied shifts and collaborating with colleagues. These skills and qualities are essential for maintaining consistent operations and delivering quality service during non-traditional working hours.

What are some common challenges of working primarily on weekends, and how can they be managed?

Working weekend shifts often means adapting to a non-traditional schedule, which can impact your work-life balance and social activities. One common challenge is coordinating personal commitments with friends or family who have standard workweeks. Additionally, some roles may have fewer resources or team members available on weekends, requiring strong problem-solving and autonomy. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to establish a consistent routine, communicate your schedule clearly with loved ones, and make use of digital collaboration tools to stay connected with your weekday colleagues.

What does weekend working mean?

Weekend working refers to performing job duties during the weekend, typically on Saturdays and Sundays, instead of or in addition to the traditional Monday to Friday workweek. This schedule is common in industries that require continuous operations, such as healthcare, retail, hospitality, and emergency services. Weekend workers may receive additional pay, flexible shifts, or compensatory time off, depending on their employer's policies and local labor laws. The nature of weekend work can vary widely based on the job role and industry requirements.

Working Dog Handler - Nights & Weekends (HRBT Project - Hampton Roads,

REBECCA MOORE GIBSON

Hampton, VA โ€ข On-site

$18 - $22/hr

Full-time

Posted 16 days ago

Job description

About the Role

Flyaway Geese is hiring a Working Dog Handler to assist with wildlife control operations at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) expansion project.
This is a hands-on, outdoor role working with trained Border Collies to humanely move and deter Canada geese from active construction zones. The work is conducted primarily at night and on weekends when bird pressure is highest and site conditions are safest for operations.
What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Handle and work alongside trained Border Collies in active field conditions
  • Patrol construction zones, shorelines, and rock areas (riprap) on foot
  • Humanely haze and move geese off-site using dog pressure
  • Maintain control and safety of dogs at all times
  • Follow site safety protocols and communicate with team members
  • Log visits and observations after each shift
Work Conditions

  • Outdoor work in all weather conditions
  • Uneven terrain (rock, shoreline, construction surfaces)
  • Night shifts and weekend coverage required
  • High-activity role involving walking, handling dogs, and staying alert
What Weโ€™re Looking For

  • Reliable and able to work independently
  • Comfortable working nights and weekendsโ€”this is required
  • Physically capable of walking long distances on rough terrain
  • Confident around dogs and able to maintain control in high-distraction environments
  • Background in dog handling, military, construction, landscaping, or outdoor work is a strong plus
What This Job Is NOT

  • Not a low-effort or โ€œwatch the dogsโ€ position
  • Not a daytime or weekday-only role
  • Not suitable for someone uncomfortable working in the dark or outdoors
Why This Role Matters

This position supports wildlife control on one of the largest infrastructure projects in the region. Your work directly contributes to site safety, compliance, and environmental management.
Immediate Need

We are actively hiring and need coverage immediately.
