As of Jul 15, 2026, the average hourly pay for weekend teppanyaki chef in the United States is $24.63, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.83 and $31.01 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How long do teppanyaki chefs train?

Teppanyaki chefs typically undergo several months to a year of training to develop skills in food preparation, knife techniques, and cooking on the teppan grill. Training often includes learning safety procedures, customer interaction, and mastering specific culinary techniques required for the role.

What is the difference between hibachi chef and teppanyaki chef?

A teppanyaki chef specializes in cooking on a flat iron griddle, often performing entertaining techniques for guests, while a hibachi chef typically cooks on a smaller, open-grill hibachi. Both roles require high culinary skill, but teppanyaki chefs focus on large-scale, theatrical cooking, whereas hibachi chefs often prepare food at individual tables in a more casual setting.

How much money do teppanyaki chefs make?

Teppanyaki chefs typically earn between $25,000 and $50,000 annually, with experienced chefs or those working in high-end establishments earning higher wages. Salaries can vary based on location, experience, and the restaurant's size and reputation.

Do you tip the teppanyaki chef separately?

In most cases, teppanyaki chefs are included in the overall service charge or gratuity at the restaurant. If no service charge is included, it is customary to tip the chef directly, typically 10-20% of the bill, especially if they provide personalized entertainment and cooking skills. Tipping practices can vary depending on the establishment and local customs.
