Position Summary
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance programs for a high-volume food distribution center. This role ensures the facility, material handling equipment, refrigeration systems, utilities, and building infrastructure operate safely and efficiently while maintaining compliance with food safety regulations, OSHA standards, and company policies.
The ideal candidate has strong leadership experience in a food manufacturing, cold storage, or food distribution environment and possesses technical expertise in refrigeration, HVAC, electrical systems, facility maintenance, and vendor management.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, and develop maintenance technicians across multiple shifts.
- Plan, assign, and monitor preventative and corrective maintenance activities.
- Ensure the continuous operation of warehouse equipment, facility infrastructure, and utility systems.
- Oversee maintenance of conveyors, dock equipment, pallet racking, doors, lighting, and warehouse support equipment.
- Manage HVAC systems to ensure proper climate control throughout the facility.
- Monitor and coordinate maintenance of ammonia refrigeration systems through internal teams and outside contractors.
- Oversee inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire sprinkler and fire protection systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment issues.
- Coordinate emergency repairs to minimize operational downtime.
- Lead facility improvement and capital projects from planning through completion.
- Manage contractor scheduling and ensure work is completed safely and according to company standards.
- Negotiate service agreements and contracts with vendors to ensure cost-effective maintenance services.
- Monitor maintenance budgets, control expenses, and approve purchases for parts and equipment.
- Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and spare parts.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, FDA, USDA, GMP, HACCP, and company food safety standards.
- Conduct routine inspections of the facility to identify maintenance needs and safety hazards.
- Maintain maintenance records, preventive maintenance schedules, and equipment documentation.
- Partner with warehouse operations to minimize disruptions while maximizing equipment reliability.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical degree or trade certification preferred.
- 3โ5+ years of maintenance supervisory experience in a food distribution center, food manufacturing, or cold storage facility preferred.
- Strong leadership experience managing maintenance teams.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office.
Required Technical Qualifications
- HVAC experience maintaining commercial and industrial systems.
- Ammonia Refrigeration Systems experience, including coordinating maintenance and ensuring regulatory compliance.
- Fire Sprinkler System knowledge, including inspections, testing, and vendor coordination.
- Electrical experience, including troubleshooting industrial electrical systems and equipment.
- Project Management experience, including facility upgrades and capital improvement projects.
- Contract negotiation experience with maintenance vendors and service providers.
- Budget control experience, including maintenance planning and expense management.
- Strong communication and negotiation skills with internal departments, contractors, and external vendors.
- Demonstrated commitment to compliance with safety policies, food safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
- Familiarity with FDA, USDA, GMP, HACCP, and SQF standards.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced distribution environment.
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Work in a food distribution center with refrigerated, freezer, and ambient warehouse environments.
- Ability to frequently walk throughout the warehouse and production support areas.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at elevated heights when necessary.
- Lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
- Ability to work around moving machinery, forklifts, conveyors, and automated warehouse equipment.
- Must be available for emergency maintenance calls and occasional weekends or extended hours based on business needs.
