Job description

SMS Mill Services, LLC is a leader in the steel mill services industry prioritizing recycling and environmental/worker' safety and handling all operations with integrity. We partner with our customers to design custom, cost-effective solutions, which focus on adding value and achieving goals for the operation and the environment. Our range of services includes, but is not limited scrap yard management, finished or semi-finished product services, melt shop services, logistics/transportation support, and slag processing.
SMS is seeking a highly dependable and safety focused Scrap Cutter to join our scrap processing operations at a Cleveland-Cliffs facility. The Scrap Cutter is responsible for safely cutting, sizing, and preparing various grades of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap materials for processing and shipment. This position plays a critical role in maintaining efficient operations while ensuring all work is performed in accordance with company and customer safety standards.
Responsibilities:
  • Safely operate oxy-fuel cutting torches and related cutting equipment.
  • Cut oversized scrap metal into specified dimensions for processing, loading, and transportation.
  • Identify and segregate scrap materials according to customer and company specifications.
  • Inspect scrap materials for prohibited items, contaminants, and safety hazards.
  • Perform daily inspections and basic maintenance of cutting equipment, hoses, regulators, and torches.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all site-specific, customer, company, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
  • Work closely with crane operators, heavy equipment operators, and supervisors to maintain production goals.
  • Complete required inspections, safety documentation, and production reports.
  • Assist with other yard and operational duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous torch cutting, welding, fabrication, scrap processing, steel mill, demolition, or industrial experience preferred.
  • Experience using oxy-fuel cutting equipment strongly preferred.
  • Ability to safely recognize and respond to workplace hazards.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work as part of a team.

Safety:
  • Adhere to all local, state, OSHA, environmental and site-specific regulations. Perform and document daily safety checks, follow all safety rules, wear PPE, provide a safe environment for all employees and visitors.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, safety glasses, face shield, hearing protection, gloves, respirator, and steel-toe boots.

Work Environment
  • Heavy industrial steel mill and scrap processing environment.
  • Exposure to heat, sparks, dust, noise, moving equipment, and changing weather conditions.
  • Rotating shifts, weekends, overtime, and holiday work may be required.
