What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Programmer, you need solid programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, often supported by a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and project management tools is important for efficient workflow. Strong time management, self-motivation, and effective communication are crucial soft skills to balance weekend work and coordinate with teams or clients remotely. These abilities enable consistent productivity, high-quality code output, and successful project delivery within tight or non-traditional schedules.

What are some common challenges faced in a weekend programming role, and how can I prepare for them?

Weekend programming positions often require balancing tight deadlines and troubleshooting technical issues with limited weekday support. You may need to work independently, manage unexpected bugs, and coordinate remotely with team members who are off-duty. To prepare, strengthen your problem-solving skills, ensure you are comfortable with documentation, and proactively communicate project updates before and after your shifts. Familiarizing yourself with the company’s codebase and support protocols will also help streamline your workflow during weekend hours.

What is weekend programming?

Weekend programming refers to the practice of coding, software development, or working on programming-related projects during the weekends, rather than as part of a standard weekday job. This can include pursuing personal projects, contributing to open-source software, participating in hackathons, or taking on freelance work. Many programmers use weekends to improve their skills, explore new technologies, or work on side hustles. Weekend programming is popular among both hobbyists and professionals who want to expand their experience or build their portfolios.

Description

As one of the nation's premier private athletic clubs and a Seattle institution, The Washington Athletic Club (WAC) is not simply a place to work, but a place to belong. The WAC features extensive amenities, such as fitness centers, a stunning pool, three restaurants, a hotel, a spa, banquet halls, and more. Built in 1930, our beautifully maintained 21-story building in downtown Seattle has landmark status.

This position is ideal for an outgoing, energetic individual who enjoys working with children, engaging with parents, and thriving in a social, fast-paced environment. The role blends hands-on event leadership with administrative coordination, requiring strong communication skills, professionalism, and flexibility. • Serve as the on-site point person for junior programming, ensuring events run smoothly, safely, and in alignment with Club standards.
  • Plan and lead fall junior camps, including activity development, group management, and daily parent communication.
  • Think creatively to develop new event ideas, and plan, organize, and execute junior programs from concept to completion.
  • Engage confidently with children and parents, creating a welcoming and positive environment for all junior members.
  • Provide public speaking support during events, announcements, and group activities.
  • Manage administrative responsibilities such as registration, communication, attendance tracking, and program documentation.
  • Coordinate calendars for junior programming, staff scheduling, and event timelines.
  • Use Excel proficiently for  rosters, schedules, reporting, and program tracking.
  • Collaborate with the Programming  & Events team to develop new ideas and enhance the junior member experience.
  • Represent The Club professionally, maintaining high standards of service and hospitality.

Qualifications

  • Strong, extroverted personality with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with children in group settings.
  • Comfortable speaking to groups and interacting with parents and members.
  • Proficiency in Excel, calendar coordination, and general administrative tasks.
  • Experience in youth programming, recreation, camps, hospitality, or events is preferred.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Professional demeanor appropriate  for a private club environment.

Schedule Requirements

  • Must have a flexible schedule, including availability for evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Schedule will vary seasonally and may be Monday-Friday or Tuesday-Saturday, depending on programming needs.
  • Additional hours may be required during peak junior programming periods.

Work Environment

This role operates within a private social and athletic club, requiring professionalism, member-focused service, and the ability to adapt to a dynamic environment. The ideal candidate enjoys creating memorable experiences for junior members and their families while balancing both event leadership and administrative responsibilities.
