OB Technician - OBGYN
Job Type: Part Time | Evenings

Schedule: 12-hour Shifts

How you'll contribute

An OB Technician who excels in this role:

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the OB Technician performs a variety of patient care, technical, and clerical duties to support the Women's Center. The OB Technician functions as a skilled member of the healthcare team, providing care, comfort, hygiene assistance, data collection, and documentation for obstetric, labor and delivery, postpartum, and newborn patients. The OB Technician assists families throughout the childbirth process, prepares delivery and procedure rooms, organizes and maintains equipment and supplies, and assists the RN and OB provider during examinations, procedures, labor, delivery, and postpartum care as requested.

  • Performs routine clinical, technical, and administrative duties in support of the Women's Center, Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Nursery areas. 

  • Assists with patient admission, transfer, discharge, and care coordination activities. 

  • Obtains and documents vital signs, collects patient information, and accurately updates electronic health records (EHR). 

  • Provides direct patient support, including assistance with activities of daily living, hygiene, comfort measures, ambulation, positioning, and postpartum care. 

  • Assists physicians, certified nurse midwives, and nurses with examinations, labor and delivery procedures, cesarean sections, newborn care, and other obstetrical procedures within scope of practice. 

  • Prepares and maintains labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum, and procedure rooms, ensuring equipment and supplies are available, clean, and stocked. 

  • Performs specimen collection, basic laboratory-related duties, and transports specimens according to established procedures. 

  • Monitors and restocks medical supplies, instruments, linens, and food stock to support patient care operations. 

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe patient care environment following infection prevention and safety guidelines. 

  • Provides patient and family support, education reinforcement, and exceptional customer service throughout the childbirth experience. 

  • Performs administrative and clerical duties, including greeting patients and visitors, answering and routing telephone calls, processing patient paperwork, assembling charts, making copies, processing orders, and facilitating communication within the department. 

  • Assists with scheduling, patient tracking, coordination of services, and other departmental support functions as needed. 

  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations, calls codes, pages providers, and assists the healthcare team during urgent patient care events. 

  • Performs all duties in accordance with accepted standards of obstetric practice and within the scope of education, training, and experience.

What we're looking for

Applicants should have a High School Diploma (or equivalent). Additional requirements include:

  • Current BLS certification required within 30 days of hire

  • Current BCLS certification preferred upon hire; must be obtained within 90 days of hire if not already certified.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Critical thinking skills, sound clinical judgment, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 

  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, stressful environment and take appropriate action in urgent or emergency situations. 

  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. 

  • Ability to provide compassionate patient care and maintain patient confidentiality. 

  • Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) and basic computer applications. 

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks, maintain attention to detail, and collaborate effectively with patients, families, providers, and interdisciplinary team members. 

  • Knowledge of basic patient care principles, infection prevention practices, and safety standards. 

  • Experience with specimen collection, patient transport, vital signs, and general patient care activities preferred. 

  • Previous clerical, scheduling, customer service, or medical office support experience preferred.
