Reports To: Shift Supervisor / Operations Manager

Location: North Charleston, SC


Position Overview

The Bulk Transfer Operator is responsible for safely receiving and unloading crude tall oil (CTO) deliveries at Mainstream Pine Products. This role also safely transfers products produced in the Tall Oil Refinery into a tank truck, railcar, or export container (ISO or Flexi). This role ensures that materials are handled in compliance with company procedures, safety requirements, and environmental standards. The Bulk Transfer Operator operates storage, loading, unloading, and auxiliary equipment, conducts inspections, and maintains accurate records of raw material receipts and shipments to support efficient and reliable refinery operations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in safety activities, including safety meetings, proper housekeeping, wearing proper PPE, following all safe work practices, reporting hazards or unsafe conditions, incident reporting and investigations, and job safety reviews.
  • Safely unload crude tall oil (CTO) from trucks, railcars, or other transport vehicles into designated storage tanks.
  • Safely load all refinery products into trucks, railcars, or other transport vehicles leaving the plant to customers.
  • Inspect incoming shipments for proper documentation, seals, and overall condition before unloading.
  • Operate pumps, valves, hoses, and related unloading equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Monitor and record loading and unloading conditions, including temperature, pressure, and flow rates.
  • Maintain accurate logs of received shipments, quantities, and any variances.
  • Perform routine equipment checks and report malfunctions or maintenance needs.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, EPA, and company safety and environmental policies during unloading activities.
  • Respond appropriately to spills, leaks, or other abnormal conditions following established emergency protocols.
  • Coordinate with operations and maintenance teams to ensure smooth material flow into the refining process.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts related to loading and unloading efficiency and safety.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Work performed in outdoor and plant environments.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and climb for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and handle industrial hoses and equipment.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including respirators, as needed.
  • Exposure to chemicals, fumes, noise, and heat during loading/unloading operations.
  • Shift work required, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements:

Qualifications & Skills

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in chemical loading/unloading, bulk material handling, or industrial operations preferred.
  • Familiarity with pumps, valves, and industrial piping systems.
  • Ability to read and follow SOPs, bills of lading, and safety documentation.
  • Strong awareness of safety practices and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
