Job description

Fuser / Pipefitter – Gas Distribution & Underground Utilities

A Fuser / Pipefitter possesses the required knowledge, skill, and physical ability to perform construction and maintenance work in gas distribution, underground utilities, and gas service lines, while interacting professionally with the public. This role performs duties as directed by the Foreman while installing and maintaining underground gas distribution piping systems in a safe and timely manner.

This position requires a strong understanding of pipefitting techniques, fusion processes, safety protocols, and industry regulations.

Essential Functions

The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Construct, install, and maintain piping systems and equipment for natural gas utilities
  • Join piping using fusion, electrofusion, or mechanical coupled joints
  • Verify specifications by performing quality assurance tests
  • Maintain all required Operator Qualifications (OQ)
  • Ensure all project work complies with installation standards and is performed safely and correctly
  • Promote and monitor the safety of team members on-site
  • Prepare job sites to optimize construction workflow and efficiency
  • Remove debris, trash, and hazardous materials from construction sites
  • Load and unload equipment and materials; restock trucks and distribute materials safely and efficiently
  • Excavate and prepare trenches for pipe installation using hand tools (shovel, rake, pick, etc.)
  • Assist with installing pipes and drains; measure, cut, join, wrap, seal, and bed underground piping systems
  • Erect temporary structures as needed to support project execution
  • Fill potholes and restore surfaces as required during construction
  • Use hand tools to cut and shape materials according to specifications
  • Identify utilities and potential hazards; assist in protecting crews from utility strikes
  • Place traffic control devices to ensure safe work zones
  • Signal equipment operators to assist with alignment and movement of machinery
  • Clean and maintain construction equipment and company vehicles
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety protocols
  • Assist skilled trades personnel in completing tasks efficiently and safely
  • Understand and properly utilize personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Follow all safety and incident reporting procedures; escalate issues to Foreman or Supervisor as needed
Qualifications / Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, safety, and quality standards
  • Ability to identify unsafe or hazardous conditions in equipment and work environments
  • Skilled in operating equipment in close proximity to workers and underground utilities

Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required; vocational training preferred
  • Prior experience in the gas utility or underground construction industry strongly preferred
