What is an assistant operator?

Assistant Operators are entry-level professionals who support the operation of machinery or equipment in industries such as manufacturing, energy, or logistics. They work under the supervision of senior operators to help monitor processes, perform basic maintenance, and ensure safety protocols are followed. Their responsibilities may include setting up machines, loading materials, inspecting products, and reporting any issues to supervisors. Assistant Operators play a key role in maintaining efficient production and minimizing downtime. This position is often a stepping stone to more advanced operator roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an assistant operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Assistant Operator, you need a basic understanding of machinery operation, safety protocols, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial equipment, control panels, and sometimes certifications like OSHA safety training are typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and good teamwork skills help you excel in supporting smooth operations. These skills ensure safe, efficient production processes and help maintain workplace safety and productivity.

What are some common challenges assistant operators face during shift changes, and how can they be managed effectively?

Assistant Operators often encounter challenges during shift changes, such as incomplete handovers or miscommunication about ongoing tasks. To manage these effectively, it’s important to follow standardized handover procedures, maintain accurate and up-to-date logs, and communicate proactively with both outgoing and incoming team members. Building strong teamwork and attention to detail helps ensure a smooth transition and minimizes operational disruptions.

What is the difference between Assistant Operator vs Machine Operator?

AspectAssistant OperatorMachine Operator

Work EnvironmentAssists in setup, monitoring, and maintenance of machineryOperates machinery directly, responsible for production output
Industry UsageCommon in manufacturing, construction, and industrial plantsPrimarily in manufacturing, processing, and production facilities

Assistant Operators support Machine Operators by preparing equipment and monitoring processes, while Machine Operators handle the direct operation of machinery. Both roles require similar credentials and are vital in industrial settings, but Machine Operators have more responsibility for operating equipment independently.

Which assistant operator job pays the most?

The highest-paying assistant operator roles are often found in industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, or power generation, where specialized skills and certifications like OSHA training or technical licenses are required. Salaries can vary based on experience, location, and industry, with some positions offering significantly higher compensation due to the complexity and risk involved.

Job description

Description:

Assistant Asphalt Plant Operator (APO)
Build Your Career in Asphalt Production

Banks Construction Company is looking for a dependable, safety-minded Assistant Asphalt Plant Operator to support our asphalt plant operations. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on work, working around equipment, and being part of the production side of heavy civil construction.

As an Assistant Asphalt Plant Operator, you’ll support daily ground operations at the asphalt plant, crusher, and unloading facility. You’ll help keep materials organized, assist with plant maintenance, support unloading operations, and work closely with the plant team to keep production running safely and efficiently.

Banks Construction operates three asphalt plant locations in North Charleston, Summerville, and Walterboro. Our plants operate day and night to support project schedules and customer needs.

About Banks Construction Company

Banks Construction Company is a third-generation, family-owned heavy civil and asphalt paving contractor serving the Charleston area. We are proud to be a local company with deep roots in the community and a strong focus on safety, teamwork, and doing quality work. Our core values are Safety, Integrity, Team, and Excellence, and our team lives those values every day on our jobsites.

About the Asphalt Plant Division

The Asphalt Plant Division is part of our Production Group and plays an important role in supporting our paving and construction operations. At each plant facility, our team unloads granite stone, crushes recycled asphalt and concrete, produces asphalt, loads trucks, and prepares materials for jobs throughout the Lowcountry.

This team helps ensure our crews and customers receive the materials they need safely, accurately, and on time.

What You’ll Do

As an Assistant Asphalt Plant Operator, you’ll assist with plant ground operations, material handling, basic maintenance, and general plant support. You may help with:

  • Monitoring material piles and communicating material levels to plant leadership
  • Helping keep aggregate material piles clean and organized
  • Greasing plant equipment and checking oil levels on machines and equipment
  • Assisting with unloading liquid materials, lime, aggregate, and other plant materials as needed
  • Running the water truck as required
  • Keeping plant areas, including the yard, tower, and work areas, clean and organized
  • Supporting crusher and unloading facility operations
  • Assisting with changing out bad rollers and other basic plant maintenance tasks
  • Working around asphalt plants, crushers, conveyors, trucks, equipment, and materials
  • Communicating with plant team members to support daily production needs
  • Following all company safety, quality, and environmental procedures
  • Helping with other plant facility tasks as needed
Schedule

This is a plant-based position, and hours may vary depending on production needs, project schedules, weather, and customer demand. Our plants operate day and night, so candidates may need to be flexible and available to work varying shifts as needed. Overtime may be required.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is dependable, safety-focused, and willing to learn. The ideal candidate:

  • Has 1–2 years of equipment, plant, construction, manufacturing, warehouse, mechanic, or hands-on labor experience
  • Is comfortable working around asphalt plants, crushers, trucks, conveyors, materials, noise, dust, and other safety-sensitive conditions
  • Is willing to learn plant operations, material handling, and basic maintenance tasks
  • Can follow directions and communicate clearly with team members
  • Takes safety seriously
  • Is dependable and shows up on time
  • Has a strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Wants to learn and grow in asphalt production and heavy civil construction
  • Is flexible and available to work day or night shifts as needed
  • Is willing to work at our plant locations in North Charleston, Summerville, and Walterboro as needed
  • Has a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Is willing to help with general plant tasks as needed

Previous asphalt plant, quarry, construction, equipment, mechanic, maintenance, warehouse, manufacturing, or material handling experience is helpful.
