Job description

Nephrology Rn

Department: Nephrology | RN - # Beds: 21 beds; all private except for one room is semi-private (2 patients); overhead lift equipment in all rooms. Bedside report and 1-2 hour rounding on patients is required.

Nurse: Patient Ratios: 1:4-5 (days) and 1:5-6 (nights).

Required certifications: RN license and BLS.

Common diagnoses/Types of patients: ESRD; AKI; Hemo- and Peritoneal Dialysis patients, parathyroidectomies (some with auto- implants), ileal conduit creations, TURPS, prostatectomies, kidney stones, graft/fistula repairs, deceased and living donor kidney and pancreas transplant both new post-op and rejection, transplant biopsies, gen-med overflow.

Experience or 'Must have' skills: gen-med background. We can provide guidance for the rest. Positive attitude, teamwork, dependability. Preferred: nephrology or urology background.

Are RNs required to titrate drips?: No

Common titratable &/or set rate drips: N/A

Is there a Charge Nurse &/or House Supervisor on each shift? Does the charge nurse take an assignment?: Charge Nurse 24/7; normally do not take patients, but may have a small team if staffing requires. We also have a house supervisor 24/7.

Are there nurse aids/patient care techs on this unit? Ratios? Duties? PCTs: 1:10-11 on days; 1-10-11 on nights. There are 2 PCT's all shifts. Duties like vital signs, baths, activity have been divided so duties are shared among all shifts. PCT's do accu-cheks and remove foley catheters, empty and hang CBI, but do not titrate it.

RT Equipment (Vents, Cpap, Bipap, High Flow, etc.) Are RNs required to do anything with these besides trouble shoot?: No vents. Bi-pap or C-pap for sleep only. We rarely see trached patients or heated high flow patients. Respiratory therapists available for assistance and for respiratory treatments. RN's administer inhalers.

Are there tele/monitor techs on this unit? Are RNs required to read their own strips? What brand are the tele monitors?: We have telemetry that is monitored by TeleTech's on another unit. Nurses not required to read or interpret telemetry information. Nurse will receive a page for rhythm changes and specifics of rhythm or HR. Phillips monitors.

Shifts & Scheduling: 3-12s (7a-7:30p days) or 3-12s (7p-7:30a). Willing to work with block scheduling and traveler needs while still fulfilling needs of unit. Self-scheduling available. Will work with Supervisor for scheduling needs.

Weekend Requirement: On days, if preferred traveler could work weekends (2-12's) plus 1-12 during the week. Not available for night shift. Weekends are every other weekendโ€”currently may not need to work as many weekends on night shift due to several weekend only positions being held by our own Nephrology staff. For days, weekends=Sat and Sun; for nights, weekends=Fri, Sat, Sun.

Holiday Requirement: Every other holiday. I am willing to negotiate holidays.

Is there Call or a Standby requirement?: No call shifts.

Floating Requirements: Float to other gen med units. May be asked to float as a sitter or to ED or ICUs as a help all only, but these situations are very infrequent, if ever.

Scrub Color/Dress Code/Scrubs provided?: Any color scrubs. No artificial nails, or gel nails, or chipped polish. No visible tattoos or piercings. Females can wear one pair simple earrings.

Unit/Department specific orientation: 3 days with preceptor.
