What is a weekend legal?

Weekend Legal jobs refer to legal positions where individuals work primarily on weekends. These roles can include tasks such as legal research, drafting documents, providing legal advice, or supporting attorneys with case preparation. Weekend Legal jobs are often sought by law students, paralegals, or professionals seeking flexible work schedules. They can be found in law firms, corporate legal departments, and legal aid organizations. These roles help law offices meet deadlines and maintain client support outside regular business hours.

What are the typical responsibilities and expectations for a weekend legal professional?

Legal professionals working weekend shifts are often responsible for urgent client needs, time-sensitive filings, and supporting ongoing cases that require immediate attention outside regular business hours. This role may involve reviewing documents, preparing emergency motions, or collaborating remotely with colleagues and clients to ensure continuity of legal services. Weekend legal work requires strong time management skills and adaptability, as tasks can be unpredictable and may need quick turnaround. Team communication and coordination are key, since weekend staff often provide updates or hand off work to weekday teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend legal professional?

To thrive as a Weekend Legal professional, you generally need a law degree, strong legal research and writing skills, and relevant licensure or certification. Familiarity with legal databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in document management systems are typically required. Exceptional time management, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These abilities ensure high-quality legal support, accurate analysis, and reliable service during critical weekend hours when urgent legal tasks may arise.

Job description

Faegre Drinker is a firm designed for clients and designed for you. We understand that our people are critical to our success and we are committed to investing in our paraprofessional, administrative and operations professionals. We are always looking for talented, service-focused individuals to join our flexible and high-performing culture. With technology tools and resources that support our hybrid work environment, our colleagues enjoy a culture of learning, support for work and personal goals, opportunities to give back to our communities, and competitive benefits and rewards programs. At Faegre Drinker, you will have the opportunity to share your expertise within and across teams and contribute to our success.

Job Description Summary:

Are you a practicing attorney or former practicing attorney looking to apply your legal expertise in a high-impact, non-attorney role where legal expertise meets emerging technology? Faegre Drinker has an opportunity for a Legal Solutions Architect to work within our Technology & Innovation department. Based in our Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Chicago, or Indianapolis office, this professional staff role is not a practicing attorney position; rather, it offers a meaningful career pivot at the intersection of law, technology, and innovation.
You will leverage your J.D. and legal practice experience to serve as a critical bridge between practicing attorneys, consulting professionals, technology and innovation teams, and clients, helping design and implement AI-enabled solutions, workflow automation, and digital tools. You will collaborate across the firm to identify opportunities, translate legal workflows into practical technology solutions, and support adoption of innovative tools that improve efficiency, quality, and client service. If you are energized by analyzing legal workflows, championing emerging technologies like generative AI, and helping deliver measurable client value through legal technology solutions, this role offers an opportunity to help define the future of legal operations.

Job Description:

What you would do:

  • Partner directly with practice groups, attorneys and consulting professionals, and clients to identify opportunities where digital tools, automation, and AI-enabled capabilities can improve efficiency, quality, client outcomes, and competitive advantage
  • Design, build, test, and maintain AI agents and AI-assisted workflows for legal processes, translating legal knowledge into scalable digital solutions
  • Facilitate training sessions, workshops, and individual coaching for attorneys and legal consultants at all levels, serving as an internal champion for AI tools by responding to questions, troubleshooting issues, and sharing best practices to drive adoption
  • Develop, test, and maintain a library of optimized prompts for legal workflows, applying prompt engineering best practices and version control while gathering user feedback to continuously improve output quality
  • Monitor developments in legal technology and AI, evaluate emerging platforms, and contribute to the firm's AI governance committees and pilot programs to help shape the firm's innovation strategy
  • Support special projects and perform other duties as assigned

What is expected:

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and diplomacy skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively in a virtual environment (e.g., via phone, web/videoconference)
  • Ability to concentrate on tasks, make decisions and work calmly and effectively in a high-pressure, deadline-oriented environment
  • Demonstrated ability to use good judgment in taking initiative while asking for direction or clarification and consulting others, as appropriate
  • Willingness to be flexible with time and adjust to a changing work environment
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships, both internally and externally, while maintaining a client service orientation in a collaborative environment
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in dealing with highly confidential information
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, organize and accurately prioritize work, be detail-oriented, understand when urgency is required and use good judgment in varied situations

What we offer:

  • Flexible working environment for work-life success
  • Opportunity to participate in firm-sponsored volunteer events
  • Wellness programming with personalized content and activities
  • Professional environment and the opportunity to work with experts at the top of their fields
  • Variety of health plan options, as well as dental, vision and 401(k) plans
  • Generous paid time off

The anticipated initial annual salary range for someone who is hired into this position is $183,066.66 - $211,433.33.

Actual initial salary may be above or below the above-identified range and will be based on the relevant skills, training, experience, and other job-related factors, including the location where the position is filled, in all cases consistent with applicable law. This is an exempt role and the initial salary range listed above is just one component of Faegre Drinker's total compensation and benefits package for professional staff, which includes, but is not limited to, a discretionary bonus; life, health, accident, and disability insurance; and a 401(k) plan.

What is required:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school with active bar membership in good standing, plus a minimum of five years practicing transactional or litigation law in a law firm, legal services organization, or professional environment
  • Demonstrated interest or practical experience in legal technology, innovation, legal operations, or process improvement, paired with a genuine curiosity about how AI and automation can transform legal practice
  • Experience with legal technology platforms such as document automation, knowledge management systems, or workflow automation tools; strong preference for practical experience with Harvey or comparable legal-specific AI platforms
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to translate complex legal and technical concepts for diverse audiences, from attorneys to engineers to clients
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to evaluate legal processes and identify operational and technology-enabled improvement opportunities
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, matrixed environment, balancing multiple initiatives simultaneously while building strong relationships across practice groups, technology teams, and innovation functions
