What are Weekend Graphic Designers?

Weekend Graphic Designers are creative professionals who work primarily on weekends to design visual content for clients or employers. Their responsibilities include creating graphics for digital and print media, such as social media posts, advertisements, logos, and marketing materials. They may work remotely or on-site, often collaborating with marketing teams or clients to meet tight deadlines and accommodate weekend project needs. Weekend Graphic Designers are valued for their flexibility and ability to handle urgent or last-minute design requests outside the traditional workweek.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Graphic Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Graphic Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and a portfolio demonstrating creative work. Familiarity with project management tools and digital asset management systems is often required, along with knowledge of web design basics. Excellent time management, communication, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for meeting tight weekend deadlines and collaborating remotely. These abilities ensure that high-quality designs are delivered efficiently, even within condensed timelines and variable schedules.

How does working as a Weekend Graphic Designer typically differ from a standard full-time graphic design role?

Weekend Graphic Designers often focus on high-priority or time-sensitive projects that arise outside regular business hours, such as social media campaigns, event materials, or urgent client requests. The role usually requires strong time management skills and the ability to work independently, as team collaboration may be limited during weekends. However, you may still interact with project managers or clients remotely to clarify requirements and deliver updates. This position can provide valuable experience handling fast-paced assignments and can serve as a stepping stone toward full-time opportunities or specialized freelance work.

Job description

Graphic Designer (Full-Time)

Location: Marion, IN (In-Office or Hybrid)

Reports to: VP of Retail Marketing

About Us

Slingshot is on a mission to transform the college experience by making course materials and campus retail simpler, smarter, and more student-focused.

We support a growing portfolio of productsโ€”including auto-fulfilled course materials, general merchandise and apparel, campus store e-commerce, and print collateralโ€”all tailored to help students and schools succeed. Whether weโ€™re designing a custom apparel collection, an in-store display, or a national course materials campaign, our work sits at the intersection of function and storytelling.

Our team is strategic, agile, and highly collaborative. Weโ€™re growing and looking for a full-time Graphic Designer to join our team and help bring stories, campaigns, and brand moments to life.

About the Role

As our Graphic Designer, youโ€™ll be responsible for concepting and executing visuals across print and digital platformsโ€”including signage, apparel mockups, email graphics, retail displays, social content, and more. Youโ€™ll collaborate daily with other designers, marketers, and creatives in a fast-paced, feedback-friendly environment.

This role is full-time, with preference for in-office presence in Marion, Indiana. A hybrid remote arrangement may be available for the right candidate.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design visual assets for digital, print, retail, and apparel
  • Support ongoing projects with product photography edits, banners, and promotional graphics
  • Collaborate with the strategy, creative and execution teams to ensure timely delivery and brand alignment
  • Work within established brand systems while also contributing fresh ideas and new directions
  • Participate in creative reviews and contribute to evolving our visual identity
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail and deadlines

What You Bring

  • 2โ€“4 years of professional graphic design experience (in-house or agency preferred)
  • A strong portfolio showcasing a mix of layout, branding, and campaign work
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign required)
  • Experience with web design platforms like Duda and Shopify
  • Experience designing for both digital and print
  • Ability to take direction, contribute ideas, and iterate based on feedback
  • Very strong time management and communication skills
Why Youโ€™ll Love It Here
  • A collaborative, creative team that truly supports one another
  • A mission-driven company making real impact in education
  • Opportunity to contribute to national brand campaigns and on-campus retail storytelling
  • Competitive salary and benefits package
