What is a weekend electrical designer?

Weekend Electrical Designers are professionals who work primarily on weekends to design, develop, and test electrical systems and circuits for various projects. They often assist companies that require extra support outside regular business hours or have tight deadlines. Their responsibilities may include creating electrical schematics, selecting components, and collaborating with engineers and clients to ensure project requirements are met. This role is ideal for those seeking flexible work schedules or supplementary income. Weekend Electrical Designers typically have backgrounds in electrical engineering or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a weekend electrical designer?

To thrive as a Weekend Electrical Designer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering principles, circuit design, and CAD drafting, usually supported by a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical simulation tools, as well as knowledge of industry codes and standards, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective communication help you stand out, especially when working independently on weekend shifts. These skills ensure accurate, compliant designs and enable efficient collaboration with teams, even during off-peak hours.

What are some common challenges faced by weekend electrical designers, and how can they effectively manage these challenges?

Weekend Electrical Designers often work with tight deadlines and may have limited access to on-site resources or full project teams due to the weekend schedule. To manage these challenges, it’s important to maintain clear communication with weekday teams, stay organized with project documentation, and proactively identify any resources needed in advance. Utilizing collaborative tools and maintaining flexibility can help ensure projects stay on track, even when working outside typical business hours.

The Electrical Designer will design lighting and power systems for horizontal infrastructure projects, such as roadway, railway, and intelligent transportation systems. This role performs detailed electrical calculations using engineering formulas and specialized software, prepares point-by-point lighting and energy code compliance calculations, and develops clear and accurate project specifications. The Electrical Designer also researches and interprets relevant electrical and energy code requirements to ensure all designs meet applicable standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Design lighting and power systems for horizontal projects, including roadway, railway, intelligent transportation systems, and signals.
  • Perform electrical calculations using engineering formulas and appropriate design software to support project requirements.
  • Prepare point-by-point lighting calculations to ensure proper illumination levels and uniformity for transportation projects.
  • Develop energy code compliance calculations to verify that designs meet applicable energy efficiency and regulatory standards.
  • Create comprehensive project specifications that clearly define materials, equipment, installation methods, and performance criteria.
  • Research and interpret electrical and energy code requirements to ensure all designs comply with current regulations and industry standards.
  • Collaborate with project teams to coordinate electrical design with other disciplines and project stakeholders.
  • Support ongoing transportation projects with DEN and CDOT-type agencies by providing accurate and timely electrical design deliverables.
  • Contribute to a strong backlog of work by delivering high-quality designs that help the firm win and retain projects.
  • Demonstrate readiness to take on increasing responsibility, with the potential to grow into a Project Manager role over time.

  • Experience developing energy code compliance calculations for electrical and lighting systems.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate project specifications for electrical systems.
  • Familiarity with researching and applying electrical and energy code requirements.
  • Hands-on experience using AutoCAD for transportation-related electrical design.
  • Practical experience using AGI32 for lighting calculations and analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate technical documentation.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with MicroStation is a plus.
  • Experience with Revit is a plus.
  • Background in electrical engineering or a related technical discipline.
