The Stationary Engineer plays a key role in ensuring the continuous functionality and efficiency of essential building systems, including chilled water, steam, compressed air, vacuum, and heating hot water systems. This position requires a high level of technical expertise and the ability to monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain complex infrastructure.

UT MD Anderson is a leading institution focused on cancer care, research, education, and prevention. The Stationary Engineer contributes directly to this mission by maintaining safe, efficient, and compliant building systems across campus operations. The Stationary Engineer ensures that all central utility systems are optimized and functioning at peak performance to support the organization's world-class facilities.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge in utility systems operations, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting. This individual demonstrates experience working with building automation systems, process water chemistry, and central plant equipment. Relevant certifications or licenses in boiler operation or stationary engineering are preferred, along with hands-on experience in a healthcare, research, or large institutional environment.

Salary Range: $69,000 - $86,000 - $103,000 Work Schedule: Thursday 10:30pm-7am; Friday 10:30pm-7am, Saturday 6:30pm-7am; Sunday 6:30pm-7am Why Us. Responsibilities Utility Systems Operation & Optimization Operate central utility systems including chilled water, steam, compressed air, vacuum, and heating hot water systems Optimize use of natural resources such as electricity, natural gas, water, and sewer systems Monitor equipment using building automation systems (BAS) Analyze system performance and adjust operations for energy efficiency and reliability Conduct routine route checks and complete shift check sheets Document daily equipment activity and system performance data Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Repair Perform preventative maintenance on boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and related systems Troubleshoot system malfunctions and identify root causes Execute corrective repairs or secure equipment and initiate repair requests Respond to equipment alarms and triage critical system failures Investigate recurring issues and implement corrective actions to prevent future failures Perform process water chemistry testing and adjust treatment as needed Water Systems Monitoring & Compliance Conduct water chemistry analysis and maintain optimal conditions Record and document test results and chemical adjustments Coordinate domestic water sanitization processes and maintain documentation Maintain water usage logs, including city, well, make-up, and blowdown meter readings Ensure compliance with all regulatory inspection requirements Coordinate and support inspections by external agencies Work Coordination & Communication Respond to facility alarms, customer service requests, and fire alarms Coordinate work orders and manage backlog for preventative and corrective maintenance Communicate system status updates with internal teams and stakeholders Serve as point of contact for vendors and contractors Oversee contractor work to ensure compliance with standards and requirements Order materials and maintain inventory for system operations Support, Training & Continuous Improvement Assist in training and orientation of maintenance staff Provide cross-functional support to refrigeration, electrical, plumbing, and maintenance teams Participate in process improvement initiatives and operational reviews Contribute to project design reviews and development of Owner's Design Guidelines Inspect completed work to confirm quality and compliance Prepare and submit operational and performance reports EDUCATION Required: High School Diploma or Equivalent Preferred: Vocational school or apprenticeship training.

WORK EXPERIENCE Required: Four years Experience working with boiler systems, chiller/cooling towers, and/or water treatment systems in a large central physical plant. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS Preferred: First or Second Grade Licensed Stationary Engineer as issued by the City of Houston. Preferred: Class D Water Operator license issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

Preferred: UC-EPA - Universal Certification Universal Certification by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Preferred: TDL - Texas Drivers License Valid Class A, B or C Texas driver's license and eligible to drive State and institutional vehicles.
