JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Court Reporter
Supervisor: Judge of Individual Court
Job Summary:
· The Court Reporter is responsible for the recording, transcription and preservation of all court proceedings. Court Reporters are responsible for maintaining evidence, exhibits and providing administrative duties on behalf of the Court.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
· None.
Duties/Responsibilities:
· Attends court sessions and other legal proceedings and uses stenography, voice recording tools, and computers to create verbatim transcriptions of legal proceedings.
· Transfers transcription of proceedings to the official record and provides copies to appropriate parties.
· Answers court telephones and respond to questions from court representatives and the general public.
· Ensures accurate transcription by double-checking record against recordings.
· Formats official records in accordance with applicable court requirements.
· Organizes records as directed by judges or lawyers.
· Develops and maintains up-to-date index of notes; coordinates records with presiding court clerk as requested.
· Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
· Ability to efficiently use stenography, voice recording devices, and/or computer software for the transcription of proceedings.
· Excellent concentration, writing, and listening skills.
· Meticulous attention to detail.
· Ability to maintain composure and calm regardless of proceedings.
· Exceptional communication skills are required, with the ability to interact with diverse groups of individuals.
· Basic understanding of legal, medical, and other technical terminology required in court proceedings.
· Basic understanding of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.
Education and Experience:
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· Three to five (3-5) years of court reporting experience and/or paralegal training preferred.
Physical Requirements:
· Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working with transcription equipment, computers, and other electronic devices.
· Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
