What Does a Web Accessibility Consultant Do?

As a web accessibility consultant, you work with clients to help improve websites that pose accessibility issues for people with disabilities. Your primary responsibilities involve identifying accessibility issues, providing potential solutions, and helping to implement technical features that allow people with disabilities to navigate a website more easily. In addition to making a website more accessible, you may also evaluate sites to ensure that they meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) or verify that educational, governmental, and employment-related sites meet requirements set out by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Web Accessibility Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Web Accessibility Consultant, you need in-depth knowledge of accessibility standards (such as WCAG), user experience, and web development, often supported by relevant degrees or certifications like CPACC or WAS. Familiarity with tools like screen readers, accessibility evaluation software, and coding languages such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is essential. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to educate clients make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure digital products are inclusive, legally compliant, and usable by people of all abilities.

What are some common challenges Web Accessibility Consultants face when integrating accessibility into existing digital products?

One of the main challenges Web Accessibility Consultants encounter is retrofitting accessibility into established websites or applications that were not originally designed with inclusive practices in mind. This often involves identifying and remediating issues embedded in legacy code, educating stakeholders about the importance of accessibility, and balancing technical constraints with business priorities. Additionally, consultants frequently need to collaborate with cross-functional teams—such as designers, developers, and content creators—to ensure that accessibility improvements are sustainable and integrated into ongoing workflows. These challenges make strong communication skills and up-to-date technical knowledge essential for success in this role.

What are Web Accessibility Consultants?

Web Accessibility Consultants are professionals who specialize in ensuring that websites and digital content are usable by people with disabilities. They evaluate websites for compliance with accessibility standards like the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), provide recommendations for improvements, and assist organizations in implementing accessible design and development practices. Their work helps make digital experiences inclusive, improves legal compliance, and broadens access for all users.
