What is a Wayfinding Design job?

A Wayfinding Design job involves creating navigational systems that help people efficiently move through physical spaces like airports, hospitals, campuses, and urban environments. Wayfinding designers use signage, maps, symbols, colors, and digital interfaces to guide individuals while enhancing user experience and accessibility. This role requires a mix of graphic design, architecture, psychology, and urban planning to develop clear and intuitive wayfinding solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Wayfinding Design position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Wayfinding Design, you need strong skills in graphic design, spatial planning, and an understanding of user experience (UX), often supported by a degree in graphic design, environmental design, or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, CAD programs, and relevant signage standards or accessibility guidelines is typically necessary. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure that wayfinding systems are clear, accessible, and effectively guide people through complex environments.

What are common challenges faced by professionals in Wayfinding Design?

One of the main challenges in Wayfinding Design is creating solutions that are intuitive and effective for people with diverse needs, including those with disabilities or limited language skills. Designers often need to balance aesthetic considerations with strict functionality and regulatory compliance, especially in complex spaces like hospitals, airports, or urban centers. They must frequently coordinate with architects, facility managers, and other stakeholders to ensure signage and navigation cues integrate seamlessly. Adapting to changing building layouts and continually improving systems based on user feedback are also integral parts of the role.

Designer

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Designer to join our signage design and implementation team. This role plays a key part in the creative development and execution of signage and wayfinding programs across a diverse range of environments, including healthcare, financial services, energy, and technology. As a Designer, you will take on ownership in developing design concepts, applying signage systems, and producing thoughtful, site-specific solutions that bring clarity to complex spaces.

Youll collaborate closely with team members across disciplines and contribute both creatively and technically to projects in various stages, from concept development through documentation and implementation.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the creative development of signage and wayfinding design solutions that align with client brand standards and the unique needs of each space
  • Apply environmental design principles and a deep understanding of scale, hierarchy, and spatial context to signage systems
  • Produce conceptual and detailed design deliverables, including elevations, renderings, location plans, and sign family documentation
  • Lead site-specific signage design efforts across multiple projects, translating broader design intent into tailored, location-specific solutions
  • Participate in signage surveys and synthesize findings into actionable design recommendations
  • Enter and manage design data in our proprietary SignChart software platform and support documentation across phases of work
  • Prepare design presentations and site books for internal and client review, including annotations, specifications, and supporting rationale
  • Work closely with Technical Designers and Program Managers to align design intent with fabrication and implementation requirements
  • Present design work internally and support client-facing discussions when appropriate
  • Manage day-to-day design responsibilities across concurrent projects, maintaining quality and meeting deadlines

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in industrial design, environmental graphic design, graphic design, architecture, or a related field
  • 2+ years of professional experience in environmental graphics, signage, or a related design discipline
  • Strong design sensibility with an ability to translate brand identity into physical environments
  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; familiarity with CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit), and SketchUp is a plus
  • Experience producing design documentation for signage programs or similar built environment applications
  • Understanding of materials, fabrication methods, and implementation constraints
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and detail-oriented
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Clear communication skills and confidence presenting design ideas
  • Willingness to travel as needed (up to 20% of the time)

Compensation

Salary: $55,000 - $65,000

Final salary will be determined based on seniority, merit, geographic location, education, training and experience, and may vary from the amount listed above.

Our people take care of us, so we take care of our people. Enjoy:

  • 401K: traditional and Roth options, plus employer match
  • 100% employer-paid medical, dental and life insurance premiums for employees
  • Optional vision, life, short-term and long-term disability coverage
  • Paid maternity leave

If you don't meet all of the requirements for this role, but feel you have something unique to contribute to Maven, we'd love to hear from you. Please do apply and tell us more about you in your cover letter.
