To thrive as a Warp Operator, you need a solid understanding of textile manufacturing processes, attention to detail, and mechanical aptitude, often supported by a high school diploma or vocational training. Familiarity with textile machinery, including warping machines and quality control systems, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication help you excel in fast-paced production environments. These abilities ensure efficient operation, minimize downtime, and maintain high-quality standards in textile production.

What are some common challenges a Warp Operator may face during a typical shift, and how can they be addressed?

Warp Operators often encounter challenges such as thread breakage, machine malfunctions, and maintaining consistent tension throughout the warping process. AspectWarp OperatorCNC Machinist
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma; technical school or apprenticeship often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing or textile facilities, operating machineryMachine shops, manufacturing plants, operating CNC machines
Industry UsageTextile, manufacturing, or specialized industrial sectorsMetalworking, aerospace, automotive, manufacturing
Job FocusSetting up and operating warp knitting or weaving machinesProgramming, setting up, and operating CNC machines for precision parts

The main difference between a Warp Operator and a CNC Machinist lies in their focus and equipment. Both roles require technical skills and familiarity with manufacturing environments, but they serve different industries and have distinct job functions.

What are Warp Operators?

Warp Operators are skilled professionals who oversee and manage the operation of warping machines in textile manufacturing. Their primary responsibility is to prepare yarns by winding them onto warp beams, which are then used in weaving processes. They ensure the correct setup of machines, monitor production quality, and troubleshoot any issues that arise during warping. Warp Operators play a crucial role in maintaining efficiency and quality in the textile production line.

Job description

JOB SUMMARY: ย The F2 Tie In Operator position is responsible for the replacement and tying of warp beams, setting up looms with the correct size, mesh, color and weave patterns and the correct entry of production information into the computer system. ย The duties also include aiding with changeovers as needed. ย Management may assign additional duties as needed. ย

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ย Will tend portable or stationary automatic warp tying-in machine that ties warp ends from full warp beam to warp in loom in order to resume weaving without repeating the drawing-in process. ย Will draw in looms and patterns when warps cannot be tied. ย Will also divide, comb out, straighten and clamp ends in position in tiers on tie-in stand. ย Will press buttons or turn cranks to start tying mechanisms. ย Will also observe and control the tying-in process as machine picks up corresponding strands from warp beam and from loom beam, ties strands together and cuts off excess yarn above knot. ย Will stop machine, correct misalignment of warp yarn and release joined strands from tie-in stand. ย Will manually tie ends not tied by machine. ย Pull warp through drop wire, harnesses and reed so knots will not jam assembly and break when loom is started. ย Will build warps. ย Will install warps into weaving machines, using warp truck with the aid of another changeover person. ย Will level and or align parts, repair or replace defective parts using hand tools. ย Will check warp pattern, sizes, fill mesh and fill yarn, then place machine in production. ย

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: ย May perform 5S tasks as needed. ย May repair warp and filler breaks in yarn. ย May start loom and inspect woven cloth to detect defects. ย May notify Loom Fixer (F2) of mechanical defects. ย May replace defective warp yarn, repair incorrect threading of looms and monitor looms to insure that fabric and fill yarn conforms to work order. ย May change set-up of loom to weave different pattern or different type of yarn. ย

SPECIAL DEMANDS/RESPONSIBILITIES: ย Must perform all duties in a safe manner. ย Must perform other departmental duties as assigned by supervisor. ย Must handle and move material without damage. ย Must be able to read a tape measure to 1/32 of an inch. ย Must be able to be trained in weaving machine operation and capable of learning to operate tie-in machines efficiently. ย Must understand basic mechanical skills and be able to apply these skills to the job. ย Must be able to work overtime as scheduled or assigned. ย

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: ย Will receive direct supervision from shift supervisor and or team leader. ย

ACCEPTABLE EDUCATION: ย Prefer a High School Diploma or GED. ย Currently assessed at the 8th grade equivalency or higher on the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) exam through our Continuous Education and Development (CED) program or have an appropriate WorkKeys score based on the job profile. ย

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: ย Prefer 12 months previous work experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment. ย Prefer 6 months loom operator experience. ย Prefer knowledge of weaving operations. ย

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED: ย Will have or can obtain certification to operate material handling equipment and Lockout/Tagout certification. ย

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: ย Ability to push, pull, front carry, horizontal lift, floor to waist lift using correct lifting procedures. ย Ability to lift sedentary (occasionally), light (occasionally), medium (occasionally), heavy (occasionally) and very heavy (occasionally) materials using correct lifting procedures. ย Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch and flex trunk frequently. ย Must have 20/35 or correctable vision in each eye. ย Must conform to all safety procedures and wear steel-toed shoes. ย
