What is warehouse robotics?

Warehouse robotics refers to the use of automated machines and robots to perform various tasks within a warehouse environment. These robots can handle activities such as picking, packing, sorting, transporting goods, and inventory management. By automating these processes, warehouses can increase efficiency, reduce labor costs, and minimize errors. The use of robotics also improves workplace safety by handling repetitive or hazardous tasks. As technology advances, warehouse robotics are becoming more common in logistics and supply chain operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in warehouse robotics?

To thrive in Warehouse Robotics, you need a solid background in robotics, automation, electrical or mechanical engineering, and often a related degree or technical certification. Familiarity with PLC programming, robotics control systems, and warehouse management software is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help individuals excel in this role. These skills ensure efficient implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of robotic systems, maximizing productivity and minimizing downtime in warehouse operations.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in warehouse robotics, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in warehouse robotics often encounter challenges such as integrating new robotic systems with legacy warehouse management software, ensuring consistent uptime of automated machinery, and adapting workflows as technology evolves. Addressing these challenges involves close collaboration with IT and operations teams, regular training on the latest robotics technology, and proactive maintenance schedules. Staying current with industry best practices and fostering a culture of continuous improvement can help overcome these obstacles and contribute to a more efficient warehouse environment.

Field Commissioning Engineer - Warehouse Robotics & Automation

Exotec

Fort Worth, TX โ€ข On-site

Full-time

Re-posted 2 days ago

Job description

Exotec designs and delivers advanced automation solutions that help global brands optimize warehouse performance while supporting warehouse teams across at every level. Our organization combines elegant mechanical design, resilient software and a deep understanding of logistics operations to solve our clients’ most complex challenges.

Working at Exotec means contributing to the systems used daily in warehouses. You'll collaborate with passionate colleagues who share knowledge, challenge ideas and work in a respectful environment that values the diversity of more than 1,000 ExoPeople around the world.

Here, your work moves from concept to production and into the hands of clients who rely on it each day. You’ll join a company where collaboration, excellence, and meaningful impact guide what's built next.
Role Summary

As a Field Commissioning Engineer, you’ll be the boots on the ground bringing Exotec’s robotics and automation systems to life at our client warehouse locations. It's a high-travel position (our engineers are on-site generally 3 weeks out of each month), but an ideal role for individuals who love solving real engineering challenges in real-world environments.
Working hands-on with robotics, hardware, software, programming tools, and third‑party industrial equipment, you'll gain broad technical experience quickly. Unlike other "engineering" roles in the industry, this is a true engineering position where you help design and refine test plans—not just execute them. The work is varied, collaborative, and directly tied to the success of each system launch.

Responsibilities
  • Manage the integration of Exotec products and third‑party systems on customer warehouse, distribution, and fulfillment sites
  • Actively participate in the commissioning process to ensure system functionality and reliability
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute system validation tests—including defining and refining test plans
  • Measure, improve, and maintain the reliability of the full solution throughout deployment phases
  • Coordinate and implement software configurations and improvements to deployed systems
  • Troubleshoot across software, mechanical, electrical, and networking layers
  • Communicate directly with customers to assess and fulfill their needs and requirements
  • Provide clear updates and documentation through Exotec’s internal tools, including coordination with the Atlanta‑based team
  • Support on-site interactions with clients, including de-escalating challenging or time‑sensitive situations
  • Inform operational teams on project progress and risks

Requirements

We strongly encourage applications from candidates of all genders to help us build a truly inclusive environment. If you don’t meet every requirement listed below, don’t worry—your skills and experiences may still make you a great fit

  • At least 1 year of commissioning robotic systems and/or equipment, ideally in industrial automation, material handling, warehousing, or logistics
  • Demonstrated experience with frequent travel (e.g., field service, commissioning, consulting, construction, or similar roles)
  • BS degree in mechatronics, robotics, mechanical, or electrical engineering (or related field)
  • Broad working knowledge across software, mechanical, and electrical engineering, with the ability to perform both hands-on troubleshooting and software configuration
  • Clear, professional communication skills, including the ability to manage on‑site client interactions and de‑escalate as needed
  • Ability to work within internal systems and tools for documentation, notes, coordination, collaborate with off-site team members, etc.
  • Comfort and openness with regular travel (up to 100% of working hours)
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job:
    • Use and manipulation of standard hand tools
    • Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
    • Working from heights of up to 50 ft
    • Use and operation of lifts with a manufacturer‑rated capacity of 250 lbs, including tools and equipment (approximately 30 lbs)
    • Stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling to access and repair equipment at ground level
    • Working on overhead equipment, including extended reaching and manual dexterity

Preferred Skills & Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD (reading and minor edits)
  • Familiarity with Python, Node‑RED, or Linux
  • Experience with Git/GitHub
  • Prior work on complex automation or robotics systems
  • Experience contributing to the creation of test plans or validation procedures

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation package, inclusive of salary and annual bonus
  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Generous vacation and time off policy
  • 401(k) with company match up to 5%
  • Continuous opportunities for training and development within a growing, international company
  • Regular company-hosted teambuilding, training and social events
