THE HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY:

The University of Saint Mary is a Roman Catholic, liberal arts university located in Leavenworth, Kansas, just 25 minutes away from Kansas City. For over 100 years, the University of Saint Mary has helped students find their way to meaningful lives and careers through an education that blends the liberal arts and a focus on critical thinking with the development of key professional skills. USM serves about 1,400 students at its main campus in Leavenworth, its satellite location in Overland Park, as well as online.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Associate Vice President for Student Success provides strategic leadership for the University’s comprehensive student success efforts and the Office of the Registrar. The Associate Vice President for Student Success develops and advances initiatives that promote student engagement, persistence, retention, academic achievement, and timely degree completion while ensuring the effective administration of academic records, registration, scheduling, and graduation processes. The Associate Vice President for Student Success fosters a student-centered culture that supports the success of all learners. This is a 12-month appointment reporting to the Provost/ Vice President for Academic Affairs that collaborates frequently with Program Directors, Division Chairs, Assessment Committee, Institutional Research, and University directors and supervisors. Additionally, this position will also assist the Provost/Vice President for Academics in matters related to assessment and initiatives in support of the university strategic plan.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Leads the development, implementation, and continuous assessment of the University's student success strategy, aligning initiatives with institutional priorities and measurable student outcomes.
  • Provides leadership and supervision for student success programs, personnel, and services, fostering collaboration, professional development, accountability, and continuous improvement across the division.
  • Partners with the Provost, faculty, academic leadership, Student Affairs, Enrollment, and other campus stakeholders to coordinate institution-wide efforts that enhance student engagement, persistence, retention, and graduation.
  • Oversees student academic support services, including success coaching, tutoring, academic interventions, first-generation initiatives, accessibility services, and other programs designed to promote student achievement.
  • Provides leadership for proactive student intervention strategies, utilizing academic performance, attendance, and other student success indicators to identify students who may benefit from additional support and coordinating appropriate interventions.
  • Leads the development and implementation of programs that support academically at-risk, conditionally admitted, and probationary students through individualized success planning and targeted support services.
  • Oversees the Office of the Registrar, ensuring effective administration of academic records, registration, scheduling, degree audits, graduation processes, and related services while promoting operational excellence and student-centered practices.
  • Collaborates with Academic Affairs and other campus partners to advance career readiness initiatives that prepare students for successful post-graduate outcomes.
  • Establishes and monitors key performance indicators related to student success, retention, persistence, and completion; analyzes institutional data to assess program effectiveness, identify trends, and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Provides leadership for the administration and continuous improvement of technologies and systems that support student success initiatives and academic support services.
  • Develops, manages, and monitors departmental budgets and resources in support of strategic priorities and operational effectiveness.
  • Represents the University through participation in institutional committees, student engagement activities, orientation programs, and other initiatives that advance the University's mission and commitment to student success.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree required; Doctorate Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience in higher education, preferred.
  • Knowledge, skills, abilities and experience in classroom and curriculum at the university level.
  • Project management and problem-solving skills with the ability to use computer information systems for data collection, reporting and analysis.
  • Skill in examining and evaluating operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
  • Experience with budget management, professional development, and employee supervision and evaluation.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and community relations skills and the ability to communicate and work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of the role of assessment for enhancing student learning.
  • Commitment to the philosophy and mission of the University of Saint Mary.
