Job description

Vice President of Engineering
Travel: 30–50% domestic travel across U.S. facilities

The Vice President of Engineering is a senior leadership role responsible for driving engineering excellence across manufacturing and distribution operations. This role blends strategic process improvement with hands-on engineering execution, ensuring facilities, equipment, and processes are safe, efficient, scalable, and cost-effective.

The VP of Engineering leads both process engineering and maintenance operations, overseeing a skilled team of welders, electricians, and technicians. This role requires deep technical knowledge, strong people leadership, and the ability to personally engage in complex engineering challenges when needed.

Key Responsibilities

Multi-Site Engineering Leadership

  • Provide engineering leadership and standardization across multiple U.S. manufacturing and distribution locations.
  • Establish common engineering, maintenance, and process improvement standards while allowing for site-specific needs.
  • Partner with site leadership to identify and prioritize operational improvement opportunities.
  • Travel regularly to facilities to assess operations, support teams, and drive execution.

Process Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Analyze existing processes to identify opportunities for automation and efficiency improvements
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, throughput, quality, uptime, and cost reduction.
  • Drive Lean Six Sigma, and reliability-based improvement efforts across sites.
  • Identify opportunities for automation, material handling improvements, and equipment optimization.
  • Ensure engineering solutions are practical, scalable, and sustainable.

Hands-On Engineering & Technical Oversight

  • Act as a senior technical authority for complex engineering challenges across the organization.
  • Support root cause analysis for downtime, safety incidents, and quality issues.
  • Review and approve engineering designs, layouts, specifications, and capital project plans.
  • Engage directly in problem-solving at facilities when needed.

Maintenance & Reliability Leadership

  • Lead maintenance strategy and execution across all locations.
  • Oversee teams that include welders, electricians, mechanical technicians, and contractors.
  • Implement and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Improve equipment reliability, maintenance planning, and spare parts management.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, electrical, mechanical, and environmental regulations.

Capital Projects & Facilities

  • Develop and manage the engineering and maintenance capital budget.
  • Lead multi-site capital projects including equipment installations, expansions, retrofits, and facility upgrades.
  • Select and manage external vendors, integrators, and engineering firms.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, or related field required).
  • Advanced degree, PE license, or certifications (Lean Six Sigma, PMP, CMRT) preferred.
  • 12+ years of progressive engineering leadership experience in manufacturing and/or distribution environments.
  • Demonstrated success managing trades-based maintenance teams (welders, electricians, technicians).

Technical Expertise

  • Strong working knowledge of manufacturing, distribution, and material handling systems.
  • Broad mechanical and electrical engineering background.
  • Experience with automation, controls, and industrial equipment.
  • Solid understanding of reliability engineering, preventive maintenance, and safety compliance.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and technical documentation.
