Job description

Vice President of Mechanical Estimating – Western PA

Established Mechanical Contractor | Executive Leadership Role | Equity Opportunity

Our client, a highly respected mechanical contractor in Western Pennsylvania, is seeking a Vice President of Mechanical Estimating to join their senior leadership team. This is a strategic, high‑impact role within a well‑established organization that self‑performs mechanical piping, HVAC, and plumbing across commercial, institutional, hospitality, and data center markets.

This is not a startup or a turnaround. This is a financially strong contractor with a deep backlog, a healthy culture, and a commitment to controlled, sustainable growth. The VP of Estimating role was created to elevate a mission‑critical function and strengthen the company’s long‑term competitive position.

Why Join This Contractor?

This organization is known for delivering expert mechanical design, construction, and service while building long‑term partnerships rooted in trust, collaboration, and exceptional results. Their culture emphasizes belonging, professional growth, and doing right by both clients and employees.

They invest heavily in their people through:

  • Comprehensive wellness and benefits programs

  • Continuous learning and professional development

  • A values‑driven culture built on expertise, integrity, passion, collaboration, and loyalty

Their core purpose is simple: Build great relationships — one project at a time.

Position Overview

The Vice President of Estimating will lead all estimating operations, personnel, strategy, and process development. This executive will shape the company’s market positioning, drive accuracy and competitiveness, and build a high‑performance estimating organization capable of supporting long‑term growth.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Partner with preconstruction and operations to ensure competitive positioning and accurate, high‑quality cost solutions.

  • Lead and structure the estimating department to support current and future workload.

  • Define roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations for the team.

  • Ensure timely and constructive engagement with subcontractors and vendors.

  • Communicate vendor/subcontractor dynamics that may impact future work.

  • Coach, mentor, and develop team members; build a succession pipeline.

  • Promote a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.

  • Stay current on code changes, industry trends, and emerging opportunities.

Strategic & Financial Leadership

  • Own the company’s estimating strategy and align it with growth and market objectives.
  • Partner with executive leadership to forecast backlog, revenue, and margin performance.

  • Establish and monitor KPIs for estimating accuracy, hit rates, and bid performance.

  • Lead go/no‑go decisions based on risk, profitability, and strategic alignment.

  • Ensure scope, design, and contractual risks are clearly communicated before handoff.

Process & Operational Excellence

  • Maintain strong client relationships and ensure transparency throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Oversee standards for estimate reviews, bid leveling, and executive approvals.

  • Champion technology adoption, data analytics, and AI‑driven estimating tools.

  • Ensure seamless turnover from preconstruction to operations.

  • Serve as a key connector between estimating, operations, business development, and executive leadership.

Market & Business Development Influence

  • Engage in industry associations to identify new subcontractors and vendor partners.

  • Build and maintain strong client relationships; support client engagement throughout all project phases.

  • Strengthen vendor and subcontractor relationships to support future work and project alignment.

  • Set the tone for a high‑performance, accountable, and collaborative estimating culture.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or related field.

  • 15+ years of proven mechanical construction experience, including HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical piping.

  • Demonstrated success leading and developing an estimating team.
