Overview of the position: The sleep technician trainee works under the direct supervision of the registered sleep technologist and is responsible for transformation, performance, and distribution of diagnostic tests, PSG, MSLT, CPAP. Must accurately analyze results of procedures in order to score information for physician interpretation. Participates in quality analysis of test results and participate with other technologists. Acknowledgment of charges for billing purposes. Responsible for application, removal and completion of all test and associatedequipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Responsibilities:
1. Works independently performing excellent quality PSG and other studies.
2. Keeps equipment in proper working order, performs routine maintenance, detects equipment malfunction; make minor repairs, and reports problems to management.
3. Selects the appropriate recording montage or montages necessary for the case under study. Obtains a high-quality recording, recognizing artifacts and taking the steps to eliminate them.
4. Assess physical and mental status before, during and after completion of test and notifies appropriate personnel in order to facilitate continuity of care.
5. Operates all equipment utilized in an optimal manner.
6. Is attentive to patient needs in order to meet customer expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. High school graduate or equivalent.
2. Currently is one of the following:
a. A student enrolled in or graduate from an accredited Sleep Technology Program (RPSGT Pathway 3/ RST Pathway A)
i. Expectation is to take and pass sleep exam within 3 months of graduation from program, or within 3 months of hire if a graduate when hired.
OR
b. A student enrolled in or a graduate from a STAR Focused Sleep Technology Program (RPSGT Pathway 4/ RST Pathway
i. Expectation is to gain enough clinical experience (direct patient recording and/or scoring) to become Registry-Eligible for Sleep Credentialing within 1 year of hire.
a. Once Registry-Eligible, expectation is to take and pass sleep exam within 3 months.
i. (STAR Focused program must have been completed no more than 3 years prior to applying to take the exam.)
OR
c. Registry-Eligible for Sleep Credentialing (Any RPSGT/RST Pathway)
i. Expectation is to take and pass sleep exam within 3 months of hire date.
OR
d. Become Enrolled in during new hire onboarding in the department or have recently completed the A-Step Online Self-Study Modules. (RPSGT Pathway 1/ RST Pathway E)
i. Expectations are to:
1. Complete A-Step within 3 months of hire date.
AND
2. Gain enough clinical experience (direct patient recording and/or scoring) to become Registry-Eligible for Sleep Credentialing within 1 year of hire date.
a. Once Registry-Eligible, expectation is to take and pass sleep exam within 3 months.
i. (A-Step must have been completed no more than 3 years prior to applying to take the exam.)
OR
e. Hold an Allied Health Profession Credential, as outlined by the BRPT or ABSM (RPSGT Pathway 2/ RST Pathway C).
i. Expectations are to:
1. Complete A-Step within 3 months of hire date.
AND
2. Gain enough clinical experience (direct patient recording and/or scoring) to become Registry-Eligible for Sleep Credentialing within 1 year of hire date.
a. Once Registry-Eligible, expectation is to take and pass sleep exam within 3 months.
3. BLS required.
4. Ability to read, write and explain or describe moderately complex information to other hospital staff and patients - Attention to detail.
5. Displays common sense and ability to make quick decisions.
6. Demonstrates solid interpersonal communication skills to include: written, verbal and telephone etiquette.
7. Demonstrates technical skills to complete assignments, experience with word, excel, and other office equipment.
8. Demonstrates the ability to learn department specific computer programs.
9. Demonstrates the ability to be self-directed yet work well with others.
10. Demonstrates the ability to problem-solve, organize, prioritize, function with minimal supervision while managing multiple tasks.
11. Demonstrates flexibility with change to include processes, priorities, workflow, and responsibilities.
