About the Job:

Coeur Alaska is seeking a motivated Mining Engineering student, to complete a Co-Op with our Mine Engineering Team at the Kensington Mine in 2027 (Ideally Jan through August) (minimum 6 months, ideally 8 months). The Kensington Mine is an underground gold mine located within the Berners Bay Mining District about 45 miles north of Juneau, Alaska.

Our Co-Op program will provide you with the opportunity to gain real-world, on-the-job experience at Coeur Alaska. Interns are mentored throughout the Co-Op by industry professionals and given ownership of projects with a tangible impact on the company. Longer rotations at site (~3 weeks on and 1 week off) will be required.

What You’ll be Doing:
The Co-Op student will be responsible for projects both underground and in the office working specifically on efficiencies to be gained in our underground operations; they will report to the mine operations and engineering team. The Co-Op will be expected to create solutions to existing challenges underground regarding drilling and blasting efficiencies, operational safety, and environmental performance with the goal to increase overall productivity of the mining operations. 

Co-Op participants will collaborate creatively and technically with Summer Interns, to create a group presentation, highlighting a company area of improvement. The Co-Op experience truly culminates with all Co-Op/interns traveling for a paid trip to Chicago! This includes each group presenting their project, meeting and learning from key company leaders, as well as networking with their fellow bright early careers participants across the company.

What We’re Looking For:

• Pursuing a degree in Mining Engineering
• Comfortable working underground for long periods, sometimes alone
• Ability to work safely and promote a safety mindset through design and action
• Project and teamwork experience
• Ability to work both independently and with a multidisciplinary team (engineers, miners, mechanics, electricians, geologists, safety coordinators, etc.)
• Standing junior or senior at an accredited university
• Minimum GPA 2.5, preferred GPA 3.0 or higher
• Ability to work 6-8 months, beginning in 2027
• Experience with Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word
• Experience with Deswik software a plus
• Self-starter and people-oriented
• Ability to adapt to a changing environment and ability to multi-task
• Strong teammate able to collaborate with teams on complex assignments
• Must be legally authorized to work full-time in the country of hire without requiring current or future sponsorship for employment.
• Curiosity and willingness to learn!

Physical Demands:

• This position requires the ability to safely perform work in a mining environment, including, but not limited to:
• Working outdoors in a range of environmental conditions, including rain, snow, ice, wind, cold temperatures, and periods of limited daylight.
• Frequent standing and walking on uneven surfaces on surface and underground.
• Climbing stairs, ladders, and escapeways.
• Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds often and up to 50 pounds on occasion, pushing and pulling equipment or materials up to 75 pounds, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
• Employees must be able to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection when applicable, work in varying environmental conditions, and participate in emergency response and evacuation procedures.

Mine Site Information:

The Kensington Mine is located within the historic Berners Bay Mining District, a region with deep mining roots that date back over a century. The mine site is a remote camp located approximately 45 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. Transportation to and from the mine site happens twice per day (once in the morning and once in the afternoon) and takes approximately 1.5 hours each way. To get to the mine site, employees board a bus in Juneau that transports to the Yankee Cove dock (~30 minutes), then board a boat (~45 minutes), then board another bus to the camp area (~15 minutes). Food and housing is provided on-site to employees. Rooms are dormitory style with two twin beds, a TV, and storage for your personal belongings.
