Position Description
Under the direction of the Principal, perform a variety of library duties involved in the circulation maintenance, processing, and distribution of books and instructional materials at an assigned elementary or middle school site; assist students and teachers in the selection, location, and use of library materials and equipmentÂ
Compensation:
Salary Range: $30.66 - $41.11 (New employees to the District, no higher than Step 6 $39.14)

Qualifications
Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalent included or supplemented by two years of college-level course work and knowledge of or experience with library procedures.Â
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Library Specialist classification is assigned to an elementary or middle school library. Specialists perform a variety of library duties involved in the circulation, maintenance, processing, and distribution of books and instructional materialsÂ
Representative Duties & ResponsibilitiesÂ
Perform a variety of library duties involved in the circulation, maintenance, processing, and distribution of physical and digital books and instructional materials at an assigned elementary or middle school site; maintain the library collection in a neat, organized, and orderly condition.Â
Circulate physical and digital library books and instructional materials as assigned; check materials in and out to students and staff using an assigned computerized system; sort and shelve new and returned books. Repairs and mends books as needed; purge, dispose of, or surplus obsolete/damaged books, equipment, and materials as needed and in accordance with District policies and procedures.Â
Assist students and staff in the selection, location, and use of library materials and equipment; respond to inquiries and provide information to students and staff; explain library practices and procedures; assist students in researching instructional materials for classroom use.Â
Process and receive library books and materials; prepare and catalog books and materials for introduction into the library materials collection; prepare barcode and identification labels; affix identification and labels to materials; input related information into the assigned computer system.Â
Promote library use through orientations, book talks, displays, and reading activitiesÂ
Collaborate with teachers to support curriculum and encourage student engagement with reading.Â
Input, scan, and update student circulation and various other data and information in an assigned computer system; utilize computers to extract and verify data and information; establish and maintain automated records and files; initiate queries and generate computerized reports.Â
Monitor inventory levels, research and order books, and other library suppliesÂ

Compile information and prepare and maintain a variety of records, lists, reports, and files related to library books, equipment, instructional materials, circulation, students, and assigned activities. Train student library assistants and parent volunteers as appropriateÂ
Communicate with students, staff, faculty, and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve library issues or concerns.Â
Collaborate with the principal and office staff to manage the library budget and coordinate the purchase of books and library supplies; collaborate with the site PTA as appropriateÂ
Operate a variety of office and library equipment, including a copier, laminator, computer, scanner, and assigned software.Â
Assist in monitoring and maintaining acceptable student behavior in the library; assure student compliance with established library rules and policies.Â
Organize and prepare library displays, decorations, and bulletin boards; maintain a clean and safe libraryÂ
Calculate and collect fees for lost, damaged, or overdue books; generate and distribute lost, damaged, or overdue book lists and notices.Â
Assist with coordinating and conducting special events, programs, and activities, such as guest speakers and other events put on in the libraryÂ
Participates in district training programs, professional development, and collaboration meetings with other librarians.Â
Works with principal to create weekly schedule, which includes access during noninstructional timesÂ

Must be able to navigate school library media center environments, move instructional materials weighing up to 25 pounds, and position oneself to assist students and retrieve items from shelves of varying heights. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods during instruction, with or without reasonable accommodation; sight or corrected vision to read printed directions or instructions; hear and speak to communicate with co-workers, students and the public; dexterity of the hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment.Â
