The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. Position Summary
Under the leadership of the Director of Direct Services and in partnership with the Senior Health Promotion Specialist, Sexual and Reproductive Health, the Health Promotion Specialist (HPS) will assist with oversight for sexual and reproductive health initiatives. The incumbent will serve as a secondary supervisor of undergraduate and graduate student staff and volunteers, including a peer advocacy program. The HPS will also conduct individual and small group sexual and reproductive health education and advocacy sessions with students.
The incumbent will work with the Director and the Senior Health Promotion Specialist to plan, implement, and evaluate sexual and reproductive health initiatives primarily including gender and sexuality education, as well as other topics such as sex and sexuality; sexually transmitted infection prevention, testing, and treatment education; HIV/AIDS prevention; pregnancy prevention, testing, and options; and birth control and emergency contraception education. This position will assist other staff at Alice! Health Promotion and Columbia Health on shared initiatives, as needed.
This is an essential on-site role. Some hybrid work options may be considered. Some evening and weekend hours may be required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this role.
Responsibilities
Sexual and Reproductive Health Services (50%)
  • In partnership with the Director and the Senior Health Promotion Specialist, oversee the planning, implementation, outreach, and evaluation of theory and evidence informed sexual and reproductive health initiatives
  • Independently lead one-on-one and small group educational sessions
  • Provide support for individuals seeking to initiate PrEP other sexual and reproductive health care. Coordinate ongoing care, such as scheduling routine lab testing, for those taking PrEP
  • Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate workshops, trainings, and programming on sexual and reproductive health topics for stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, etc.)
  • Serve as a key resource and subject matter expert to Columbia Health and campus partners
  • Serve as secondary supervisor for the peer advocacy program in collaboration with the Senior Health Promotion Specialist during virtual and onsite drop-in hours
  • Independently develop or obtain resources for Peer Advocates and informational material for clients
  • Build and maintain relationships with resources and establish and evaluate a streamlined referral process to ensure students can access appropriate support in a timely manner
  • Represent Alice! Health Promotion, Direct Services, and SRH programs at trainings, workshops, and other Columbia events
  • In partnership with the Director, identify and facilitate professional development opportunities for Alice! team members, including assessing staff needs and managing training in collaboration with other departments
  • Participate in sexual and reproductive health working groups and committees

Peer Advocate Supervision (25%)
  • Assist with functional and procedural supervision including planning, training, mentoring, scheduling, implementation, evaluation, and daily oversight of the peer advocate program
  • Assist with recruiting and supervising volunteers, peer advocates, and peer educators
  • Partner with on and off campus experts to conduct volunteer and peer trainings
  • Co-lead group supervision sessions
  • Monitor and respond to peer questions in person and on virtual communication channels

Operations (20%)
  • Monitor and triage inquiries from internal and external stakeholders
  • Exercise significant independent decision-making during triage
  • Collect, validate, analyze, and disseminate data for annual reports; prepare statistical reports and other summaries on program utilization
  • Provide cross-coverage and backup support for Alice! Health Promotion, Columbia Health, and Columbia University programs and initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with patient privacy and confidentiality laws across all services (including HIV testing) in conjunction with Columbia Health providers and administrators
  • In collaboration with the Alice! Health Promotion leadership and Columbia Health Administration, design and conduct assessment, evaluation, and research studies
  • Support the research, writing, editing, and updating of web-based related content
  • Build and maintain working relationships with Columbia University departments and local resources in New York City
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders on- and off-campus to contribute to a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to supporting student wellbeing

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent
  • Minimum 2 years of closely related experience
  • Knowledge of sexual and reproductive health
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of a diverse student population with cultural humility and sensitivity
  • Demonstrated ability to remain calm and respond to individuals in crisis
  • Demonstrated computer proficiency (e.g., Microsoft suite, virtual meeting platforms)
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including a high level of attention to detail and active listening skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to make decisions in accordance with established policies and regulations
  • Commitment to excellent customer service and exceptional quality
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities, effectively manage multiple and simultaneous projects, and work with diplomacy and efficiency

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or advanced degree in public health, health promotion, education, humanities, social work, or other closely related field
  • CHES/MCHES or CPH certified (or eligible with intent to become certified)
  • National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) or Real Balance Certified Wellness & Health Coach (CWHC)
  • Training in HIV/AIDS education, counseling, and testing
  • Experience with direct student support including trauma-informed practices and motivational interviewing
  • Experience working with college students and a strong interest in higher education
  • Ability to foster positive and productive relationships with all campus constituencies including students, administrators, faculty, and staff
  • Experience working in coalitions or collaborating with individuals and organizations
