What is a volunteer developer?

A Volunteer Developer is an unpaid software developer who contributes their skills to projects for nonprofits, open-source initiatives, or community-driven efforts. They help design, develop, and maintain software applications, websites, or tools to support an organization's mission. This role allows developers to gain experience, build a portfolio, and give back to the community while collaborating with other professionals. Volunteer Developers typically work remotely or on a flexible schedule, depending on the project's needs.

What do volunteer developers do?

As a Volunteer Developer, you'll often work on projects such as building or improving websites, developing applications, or automating tasks for non-profit organizations and community initiatives. Your responsibilities may include coding, participating in code reviews, collaborating with other team members, and occasionally assisting with documentation or user support. Tasks can vary based on the organization's needs, but you'll usually work alongside project managers, designers, and other volunteers in a collaborative setting. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain real-world experience while contributing to meaningful causes and expanding your professional network.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a volunteer developer?

To thrive as a Volunteer Developer, you need strong coding skills in relevant programming languages, a good understanding of software development principles, and ideally some prior project experience. Familiarity with popular version control systems like Git, basic knowledge of collaborative platforms such as GitHub, and experience with agile project management tools are commonly expected. Excellent communication, adaptability, and a proactive attitude help you work effectively within diverse volunteer teams. These competencies ensure valuable contributions to projects despite limited resources and help foster a productive, positive environment.

Job description

About Nakisa

Nakisa is a global leader in AI-powered enterprise software for Human Resources, Financial Management, and Commercial Real Estate (CRE). Our cloud platform powers mission-critical operations for 1,100+ organizations in 135 countries and serves millions of users.

We are building the next wave of enterprise applications with Nakisa AI. Our products use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) with secure API integrations to large language models. Customer data stays private and auditable, and we never use client data to train third-party models. This privacy-first design gives enterprises trustworthy AI they can run in production.

What sets us apart is a single platform that connects these functions on shared data models, a focus on high-stakes, compliance-heavy workflows, and a culture anchored in Fairness, Integrity, Service, and Humility. Recognized among Canada's top employers, we offer hybrid work, supportive leaders, and clear growth paths. Join us to ship reliable, privacy-first AI at global scale.

About the role

As a Software Developer at Nakisa, you will design, build, and maintain scalable, cloud-native applications used by Fortune 1000 companies around the world. Working within an Agile team, you will contribute to the full software lifecycle — from architecture and design through implementation, testing, and deployment — helping evolve our product portfolio to meet the highest standards of performance, reliability, and security. You will collaborate closely with Product, QA, and DevOps as part of our continued shift toward NoOps-driven, cloud-native delivery.

What you'll be doing

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services and their corresponding frontend components.
  • Design and optimize APIs, database schemas, and system architectures.
  • Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code that follows established best practices and design patterns.
  • Collaborate with Product, QA, and DevOps teams to deliver high-quality software on schedule.
  • Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and technical decision-making.
  • Take ownership of assigned components, ensuring their performance, scalability, and reliability, and support related production issues.
  • Work within an Agile, Test-Driven Development (TDD) environment, contributing to sprint planning and continuous improvement.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT/Codex) to improve development speed and code quality.
  • Continuously explore and help introduce new technologies, tools, and best practices across the team.

What you bring

  • A genuine passion for software development — you enjoy the craft, take pride in your code, and are always looking for a better way to build something.
  • A strong drive to learn: you're eager to pick up our stack (Java, Spring Boot, Vue.js, and beyond) and quickly become fluent in new tools, frameworks, and technologies.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with a solid foundation in Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and common design patterns.
  • Curiosity about full stack development — comfortable moving between backend (Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs) and frontend (Vue.js, Angular, or React) work, and excited to deepen that range.
  • A self-starter mindset: you take ownership of problems, ask good questions, and are comfortable working both independently and as part of an Agile team.
  • Strong problem-solving instincts and a genuine enjoyment of technical challenges.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the openness to give and receive feedback in code reviews and design discussions.
  • Comfort thriving in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities and technologies shift.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Java 17+ and building scalable applications using microservice architecture.
  • Proficiency with DevOps and containerization tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Jenkins.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing environments (AWS, Azure) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with front-end build tools (Webpack, Babel) and state management libraries (Vuex, Pinia, or similar).
  • Experience with data engineering tools such as Apache Kafka, Apache Airflow, Elasticsearch, or Apache Flink.
  • Experience with data visualization libraries such as D3.js, Plotly, or ECharts.
  • Understanding of the HR or Financial domain space.
  • Proficiency in French and English is an asset for collaboration across our Quebec-based and global teams.

What's in it for you?

  • Work on cutting-edge, cloud-native applications as part of a dynamic and forward-thinking team.
  • Be part of a company that values continuous learning, innovation, and professional growth.
