Responsibilities:
  • Set up and operate roll grinding equipment to grind paper machine rolls to specified dimensions, crown, taper, and surface finish requirements.
  • Read and interpret work instructions, blueprints, roll records, and specifications to determine grinding requirements and tolerances.
  • Measure rolls using precision instruments such as micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other gauges to verify compliance with specifications.
  • Inspect rolls for surface defects, wear patterns, damage, and alignment issues; identify conditions requiring repair or escalation.
  • Safely handle, load, position, and unload large rolls using overhead cranes, forklifts, hoists, and related material handling equipment.
  • Dress grinding wheels, select appropriate tooling, and make machine adjustments to achieve required results.
  • Perform all job requirements according to procedures outlined in the VOITH Quality Manual, Company Procedures, and Work Instructions.
  • Reports problems to higher levels of authority as required by the Quality System.
  • All other duties that may be assigned.

Requirements:
  • High school diploma or GED required; technical training in machining, manufacturing, or industrial maintenance preferred.
  • Previous experience operating roll grinders, cylindrical grinders, or similar industrial grinding equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of grinding principles, surface finishes, roll geometry, and machine setup.
  • Experience in a paper mill, converting facility, machine shop, or heavy industrial manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Must possess good mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, mechanical drawings, and shop sketches.
  • High School graduate or equivalent is required.
  • Vocational school graduate or apprenticeship in machining, millwright, mechanical maintenance, or equivalent is a plus, but not required.
  • Commitment to safe work practices and quality workmanship.

Physical Demands:
  • Regular standing, walking, bending, reaching, and lifting in a machine shop environment.
  • Ability to lift materials, tools, and parts as required by the job.
  • Exposure to noise, moving mechanical equipment, metal chips, lubricants, and varying shop temperatures.
  • Use of required personal protective equipment including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety shoes.
