What is a visual content designer?

A visual content designer is a professional who creates visual materials such as graphics, illustrations, and layouts for digital or print media. They often use tools like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Canva and focus on visual storytelling, branding, and user engagement to support marketing, advertising, or communication goals.

How does a Visual Content Designer typically collaborate with other departments or teams within an organization?

Visual Content Designers frequently work closely with marketing, product, and communications teams to ensure that visuals align with brand messaging and campaign goals. Collaboration often involves participating in brainstorming sessions, receiving feedback from stakeholders, and refining designs based on input from various departments. Effective communication and the ability to incorporate feedback are essential, as projects can evolve rapidly with shifting priorities. This cross-functional teamwork helps ensure cohesive visual storytelling and supports broader organizational objectives.

Is AI replacing graphic designers?

AI tools are increasingly used in visual content design to automate repetitive tasks and generate basic graphics, but they do not fully replace graphic designers. Designers bring creativity, strategic thinking, and nuanced understanding that AI cannot replicate, making human expertise essential for complex and original visual content creation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Content Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Content Designer, you need a strong grasp of design principles, typography, color theory, and proficiency in graphic design, often backed by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in tools like Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital asset management systems are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for translating ideas into compelling visuals and collaborating with clients or teams. These skills ensure the production of impactful visual content that aligns with brand objectives and engages target audiences.

Is UX a stressful job?

A visual content designer's role can involve tight deadlines, client feedback, and the need for creativity, which may contribute to stress. However, many find the work rewarding and manage stress through good time management and collaboration. Overall, stress levels vary based on workload, work environment, and individual resilience.

Description

About the Role
We’re looking for a Creative Content Designer to join our in-house creative team and help bring our brands to life across digital and physical channels. This is a design-forward role focused on creating compelling visual content through graphic design, product photography, and digital asset creation. The ideal candidate has strong design fundamentals, exceptional product photography skills, and the ability to create polished content that supports eCommerce, marketing campaigns, packaging, and brand storytelling.

This role is ideal for a highly visual creative who enjoys concepting, styling, designing, and photographing products in a collaborative, fast-paced environment.

What You’ll Do
Design & Creative Execution
  • Design assets for digital and print including social, email, eCommerce, advertising, packaging, and merchandising for the Central Specialty Pet portfolio of brands (Aqueon, Coralife, Zilla, Kaytee and C&S Suet)
  • Translate creative briefs into effective, on-brand visual solutions
  • Maintain consistency across all brand touchpoints
  • Apply strong typography, layout, and visual storytelling principles
Product Photography & Visual Content Creation
  • Plan and execute high-quality product and lifestyle photography
  • Style, light, and photograph products for eCommerce, packaging, digital marketing, and social content
  • Retouch and edit photography including color correction, compositing, and asset optimization
  • Create visually engaging branded content across digital channels
  • Capture occasional short-form video content for social and marketing use
  • Maintain consistency in visual style, lighting, and brand presentation
Content Production & Workflow
  • Manage projects from concept through final delivery
  • Adapt content across multiple formats and platforms
  • Organize and maintain digital asset libraries
  • Ensure assets are optimized for platform requirements
Collaboration
  • Partner with Marketing, Digital, and Sales teams on campaigns and product launches
  • Participate in brainstorming sessions and creative reviews
  • Manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines and quality expectations
 What You Bring
  • 3–6 years of experience in graphic design, content creation, or a related role
  • Strong portfolio showcasing both graphic design work and photography content
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Strong studio photography skills (lighting, composition, product shooting)
  • Familiarity with basic video editing or motion content creation is a plus (Premiere Pro, After Effects, or similar)
  • Solid understanding of digital and social content best practices
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Portfolio Requirements
To be considered, candidates must include a portfolio that demonstrates strong graphic design execution and product photography capabilities.

Your portfolio should include:

  • Product photography examples (required)
  • Evidence of lighting, composition, styling, and retouching skills
Optional but Preferred
  • Short-form social or motion content
  • Basic video editing or animation examples
Important:
This is a design-forward role with a strong emphasis on product photography and branded visual content creation. Candidates whose portfolios are primarily focused on videography or video production may not be the best fit for this position.

Nice to Have
  • Experience in consumer goods, retail, or eCommerce
  • Experience creating content for social media and digital campaigns
  • Basic motion graphics or animation skills
  • Experience working in a small, in-house creative team
