What is virtual work?

Virtual work refers to jobs or tasks performed remotely, typically using computers and internet technology. Virtual workers, also known as remote workers or telecommuters, can complete their responsibilities from any location outside of a traditional office. This arrangement offers flexibility and can increase productivity, but it also requires good communication skills and self-motivation. Virtual work can include a wide variety of roles, such as customer service, programming, writing, or project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a virtual work environment, and why are they important?

To thrive in a virtual work environment, you need strong self-management, time management, and digital communication skills, often supported by experience with remote collaboration. Familiarity with video conferencing tools, project management platforms, and cloud-based document sharing systems is typically required. Proactiveness, adaptability, and clear written communication are standout soft skills for remote professionals. These skills and qualities ensure productivity, effective teamwork, and seamless workflow in a distributed work setting.

Amazon offers remote work opportunities for various roles, and many employees are paid regularly for work performed from home. Compensation depends on the specific position, location, and employment terms, and remote jobs often require skills in communication, technology, and time management.

Both can be performed remotely, but virtual work offers more variety and skill requirements, whereas data entry is more straightforward and task-specific.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in virtual roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in virtual work roles often face challenges such as communication barriers, feelings of isolation, and difficulties in maintaining work-life balance. To address these, it is important to establish clear communication channels with teammates, schedule regular check-ins, and set firm boundaries for work hours. Utilizing collaboration tools and participating in virtual team-building activities can also help foster a sense of connection and teamwork. Being proactive in seeking feedback and support from managers or colleagues further aids in overcoming the unique hurdles of remote work.

This role supports the design, administration, monitoring, and continuous improvement of endpoint management, security, virtual desktop, and reporting capabilities across the workstation environment. The ideal candidate will help maintain a secure, compliant, and reliable desktop ecosystem by managing endpoint policies, investigating non-compliance, supporting virtual desktop templates, and producing clear operational reporting for technical and leadership audiences.

What you will do

  • Support Microsoft Defender policies, reporting, and remediation activities
  • Investigate workstation compliance issues and recommend fixes
  • Maintain virtual desktop templates and ensure they meet architecture standards
  • Create and maintain reports on workstation compliance, endpoint health, and remediation progress
  • Build Power BI dashboards for reporting, compliance tracking, and leadership updates
  • Work with IT teams to solve issues, confirm results, and improve desktop processes
  • Support desktop solutions through planning, testing, rollout, monitoring, and ongoing support
  • Create and maintain technical documents, support guides, and process materials
  • Ensure solutions and reports are accurate, secure, and aligned with standards
  • Find ways to automate reporting, improve data quality, and simplify processes
  • Support Configuration Manager reporting for inventory, deployment, patching, and compliance
  • Perform other related duties and contribute to projects or operational priorities as required

What you bring to the role
  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to investigate technical issues, identify patterns, and recommend practical remediation steps
  • Good communication skills with the ability to explain technical findings in clear language for both technical teams and business or leadership stakeholders
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, follow through on operational tasks, and deliver accurate work in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with cross-functional IT teams, including endpoint management, cybersecurity, infrastructure, service desk, and operations groups
  • High attention to detail, with a strong ability to validate reporting outputs, review policy results, and maintain accurate documentation
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and taking ownership of issues through investigation, coordination, and resolution tracking
  • A continuous improvement mindset, with interest in simplifying processes, improving reporting quality, and strengthening endpoint compliance practices
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Intune policy management, device compliance, configuration profiles, endpoint security policies, and reporting
  • Experience with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint policy management, endpoint security posture review, and security-related reporting
  • Experience investigating workstation compliance issues across policy, device, user, security, and configuration data sources
  • Experience supporting Azure Virtual Desktop or similar virtual desktop environments, including image/template administration and validation.
  • Strong reporting and data analysis skills, including the ability to consolidate and interpret data from multiple endpoint, security, and service management platforms
  • Proficiency with Power BI for building reports, dashboards, data models, and executive-ready views of operational or compliance data
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365, Azure, Windows endpoint management, and enterprise desktop architecture concepts
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting to automate endpoint administration tasks, support reporting activities, validate workstation configuration, and assist with remediation of compliance issues
  • Microsoft Configuration Manager / SCCM reporting experience is an asset but not required
  • ServiceNow reporting experience is nice to have but not required
