DevOps Engineer (Hybrid)

Unlimited Systems

Cincinnati, OH • On-site

Full-time

Job description

The Company

Unlimited Systems authors the category-leading Unlimited Financials practice management system focused on the unique revenue cycle requirements of specialty healthcare providers. Unlimited Systems customers enjoy streamlined business office workflows, reduced claim denial rates, and accelerated and amplified revenue streams. Unlimited Systems is committed to ensuring that specialty healthcare providers thrive in a dynamic reimbursement environment.

The Challenge

Unlimited Financials operates across a sophisticated cloud-native environment; Azure Kubernetes Service, event-sourced microservices, healthcare integrations, and a growing network of downstream data pipelines. At Unlimited Systems, the DevOps Engineer isn't just keeping servers running; they're protecting the financial health of the providers who depend on Unlimited Financials to get paid. DevOps Engineers bridge the gap between moving fast (shipping features, onboarding customers) and staying safe (security, compliance, reliability). A tension that is sharper in healthcare than in almost any other industry.

As the operational backbone of a compliance-heavy environment, DevOps Engineers ensure infrastructure is HIPAA-sound, audit-ready, and resilient enough that a failed deploy or infrastructure event never becomes a provider's cash flow problem.

The Position

A full-time, hybrid role reporting to our DevOps Manager, our DevOps Engineer will occasionally work from our headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio. Residency in the state of Ohio or Northern Kentucky is preferred.

At Unlimited Systems, you will operate with a sense of weightiness around production incidents and work actively to build systems to prevent them. As a DevOps Engineer, you will own the reliability, security, and delivery infrastructure that keeps the RCM platform running for healthcare providers who depend on it to get paid.

In this position, you will be accountable for:

  • Optimizing cloud resources within Azure to ensure product reliability and high-performance experiences for end-users

  • Managing and analyzing Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) resources to support application availability and scalability

  • Collaborating with Developers and Software Engineers to design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines throughout the development lifecycle

  • Proactively monitoring and alerting on application performance using Instana and Splunk, identifying and addressing issues before they impact end-users

  • Authoring and maintaining Infrastructure as Code (IaC) scripts using tools such as Azure Bicep and Terraform to ensure repeatable, accurate, and consistent resource deployments across subscriptions

  • Leveraging AI tooling (Claude) to improve operational efficiencies and automate standard DevOps practices

  • Troubleshooting and resolving errors and issues that arise throughout the development and production lifecycle

  • Documenting best practices, procedures, and runbooks to ensure operational consistency and knowledge continuity across the team

  • Managing DNS configuration and SSL certificate lifecycle across environments

  • Managing Web Application Firewall (WAF) policies and associated rules to protect application endpoints

  • Applying security best practices across Azure resources including RBAC, managed identities, Key Vault integration, and network segmentation

  • Supporting audit readiness and compliance requirements relevant to healthcare environments, including HIPAA-adjacent controls

  • Demonstrating a strong understanding of networking concepts including VNets, subnets, peering, routing, and NSGs to support a secure and well-architected Azure environment

  • Deploying and configuring Azure Virtual Machines to support ad-hoc infrastructure needs across the organization

The Person

Unlike a general SaaS product, Unlimited Financials sits at the intersection of PHI and financial data. That means as a DevOps Engineer you must satisfy HIPAA, PCI-adjacent concerns, and SOC 2 simultaneously — across every environment, pipeline, and integration point. To be successful in this role, you’ll be trusted to balance and bridge our proprietary software against high-stakes client experiences.

In this role, you’ll be asked to:

  • Champion safe deployments in a zero-tolerance environment. RCM users — billers, coders, AR teams — work in Unlimited Financials all day. A bad deploy that corrupts a claim queue or breaks a remittance workflow has immediate, measurable financial impact on a provider. The DevOps engineer builds pipelines that allow the product team to ship confidently without putting revenue at risk.

  • Always be at the “ready”. RCM platforms are frequent targets of payer audits, compliance reviews, and security assessments. The DevOps engineer ensures that infrastructure state, access logs, and change history are always audit-ready — not scrambled together the week before a review.

  • Exude collaboration and maturity. You’ll work directly with product and engineering teams to shape deployment practices, not just execute them. You’ll be comfortable pushing back when a release process introduces unnecessary risk. You’lldocument systems, write postmortems, and close the loop — not just fixing things and moving on.

Qualifications

Required

  • 4–7 years in a DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Site Reliability role

  • Prior experience in healthcare, RCM, health-tech, or fintech strongly preferred — someone who already understands what's at stake when systems go down

  • Hands-on experience with AWS or Azure

  • Have built or meaningfully owned a CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar)

  • Have working knowledge of HIPAA technical safeguards — encryption, access controls, audit logging — not just awareness that it exists

  • Have built or maintained a monitoring and alerting stack (Datadog, Grafana, CloudWatch, PagerDuty)

  • Experience with queue-based architectures (SQS, Kafka, RabbitMQ) relevant to claim and remittance processing pipelines

  • Experience owning production infrastructure (not just contributed to it)

  • Can be comfortable writing runbooks and leading an incident response (has been on-call and has the scars to prove it)

  • Can distinguish signal from noise in a high-alert-volume environment

Preferred

  • Experience working in a hybrid or multi-cloud environment common in health system integrations

  • Understands Infrastructure as Code — Terraform or Pulumi; you can write it from scratch, not just modify existing configs

  • Understands container orchestration — Kubernetes or ECS in production, including autoscaling, health checks, and resource management

  • Experience with staged rollouts, feature flags, and automated rollback — not just "push to prod"

  • Understand the difference between deploying fast and deploying safely in a regulated environment

  • Experience supporting a SOC 2 Type II or HITRUST audit — has pulled evidence, worked with security teams, or hardened infrastructure for a review

  • Has familiarity with secrets management (Vault, AWS Secrets Manager) and least-privilege IAM practices

  • Has familiarity with EDI, HL7, FHIR, or API gateway patterns

Our Process

If you’ve made it this far in the job description, we’d love to hear from you. We will try to ensure our selection process is efficient, transparent, and friendly. (If it’s not, please let us know.)

What you can expect from here:

  • If we feel your experience aligns with our search, we’ll reach out for a discovery call. We’ll talk about our company culture, Unlimited System’s Core Values, this position, and we’ll learn more about your background.

  • From there, we’ll ask to view some of your previous work as well as request that you complete an assessment. This lets us know whether our expectations for the role actually align with your unique strengths.

  • If we’re still feeling good about each other, we’ll pass you on to our Hiring Manager and then to a panel interview so you can meet more of the faces of Unlimited Systems before we make an offer decision.
