Job description

JOB TITLE: BAVEL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR (Elem, Middle, High)
DEPARTMENT: GUIDANCE
REPORTS TO: BUILDING ADMINISTRATOR
APPROVED BY: DATE:
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Responsible for the organization of student services under the direct authority of the principal
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have no convictions of a felony or past criminal history,
  • be in good health as evidenced by completion of a physical examination as prescribed by the Board
  • Must be of good character and moral behavior;
  • Master's degree in Guidance Counseling; Kentucky Guidance Counselor's certificate;
  • Successful teaching and counseling experience desired.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Demonstrate positive behavior toward the purposes and goals of BAVEL
  • Individual counseling with students as referred by parent, principal, teacher or student (personal, academic, behavior, etc.)
  • Provide preventive guidance and coordinate support groups. Topics may include but not limited to peer mediation, conflict resolution and other proactive programs to address student needs. These sessions give the students an opportunity to get to know the counselor and may open the door for individual counseling in the future
  • Provide program specific counseling services to identified groups (ie. Gifted and Talented)
  • Coordinate and implement response to intervention (MTSS) strategies with staff and students
  • Assist in identifying students with special abilities or needs
  • Assist and serve as designee to chair ARC meetings as assigned
  • Assist in registration of new students throughout the year, as well as summer and kindergarten registration
  • Provide interpretation of student intake / placement information and recommend appropriate course choices to foster continuity between grade levels and schools, as well as opportunities for further education, careers and career training opportunities
  • Assist in the maintenance of cumulative student folders and state required reports.
  • Assist building coordinator with scheduling and facilitation of state mandated testing
  • Coordinate and make students aware of community agencies available beyond those that can be provided by the counselor
  • Member of school and district crisis teams
  • School Retention Committee member
  • Implement the Kentucky Professional Standards as well as the Standard set forth by the Board for School Counselors
  • Be familiar with all teacher and district handbooks and adhere to policies of the Board of Education and administrative rules and regulations
  • Perform other tasks or duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or building principal
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Show enthusiasm, interest and concern for the total program and its efficient operation
  • Be consistently responsible and display an attitude of honesty and credibility
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance
  • Maintains student control
  • Be clean, neat and professionally dressed
  • Will be required to complete all required training and attend in-service sessions.
  • Performs assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Consistently displays self-control with parents, students and school personnel.
  • Understands the operational technologies needed in the digital/virtual learning student and environment
  • Dedicates time and energy to keeping abreast of the latest information related to area of expertise and technology
  • Possesses strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Flexibility to accommodate non-traditional office hours to facilitate synchronous and asynchronous learning, when applicable
  • Maintains a clean workstation (bus, desk, office, etc.) and does maintenance as needed
  • Operate equipment in a safe manner at all times
  • Demonstrates positive behavior toward the purposes and goals of the Barren County Public Schools

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Work year is comprised of the number of days as designated by board policy.
  • Salary commensurate with adopted certified personnel salary schedule.
  • Sick leave and personal leave provided as stated in board policy.
