How much do virtual adjunct faculty jobs pay per hour?
What is a virtual adjunct faculty?
A Virtual Adjunct Faculty job is a part-time, remote teaching position at a college or university. In this role, instructors deliver course content, facilitate discussions, grade assignments, and support students through online platforms. They typically teach specific courses based on their expertise and institutional needs. Virtual adjunct faculty must be proficient in online learning technologies and adaptable to remote teaching environments. This position offers flexibility but may not include long-term job stability or benefits.
What does a virtual adjunct faculty do?
Virtual Adjunct Faculty typically enjoy flexible schedules, allowing them to set their own hours for tasks like grading, responding to student inquiries, and preparing course materials. However, some roles may require attending occasional live online sessions, virtual office hours, or faculty meetings scheduled by the institution. Workloads can vary each term based on the number of courses assigned and enrollment size. This flexibility enables adjunct faculty to balance their teaching responsibilities with other professional or personal commitments, making it an appealing option for educators who value autonomy.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a virtual adjunct faculty?
Virtual Adjunct Faculty members need specialized knowledge in their academic subject area, a relevant graduate degree (often a master's or doctorate), and teaching experience. Comfort with Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas or Blackboard, video conferencing tools, and digital grading platforms is essential. Strong communication, self-motivation, time management, and adaptability help instructors engage students and manage courses remotely. These competencies are crucial to deliver quality education, facilitate student success, and maintain academic standards in an online environment.

Our success is built upon the stature of our faculty. That is, to be effective, the School needs a cadre of individuals, irrespective of gender, race, or ethnicity, who are dedicated to creative and innovative approaches to education. While the School is committed to attracting individuals who can achieve just that, Academic Affairs has been entrusted with facilitating their professional growth.
The Gillings MPH includes quality residential and online programs offered in a variety of concentration areas relevant to today's public health needs. These offerings are designed to meet the needs of a diverse student body and to fuel the public health workforce. Central to Gillings MPH is the MPH Core, an foundational interdisciplinary first-year set of core courses driven by the latest recommendations from the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) and the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The Gillings School has expanded its online offerings to add MPH@UNC, delivered with support from digital educational partner 2U . MPH@UNC is a flexible degree option for those with professional or personal constraints limiting participation in a residential program in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Students learn from UNC lead faculty and section instructors through a unique blend of highly interactive online learning in small-group virtual classroom setting. MPH@UNC students must meet the same selective admissions criteria as the residential programs and upon graduation, earn an identical diploma.
Section instructors for MPH@UNC will be responsible for teaching core or concentration courses.
Section instructors teach live, online, synchronous class sessions once each week for 13 weeks. The MPH@UNC term is 14 weeks long with 13 weeks of content. The program recognizes some holidays and well-being days that are equal to one week off during the term. Classes are solely scheduled on weekday evenings, Monday - Thursday only. Key responsibilities of the section instructor include:
* Facilitating weekly live sessions in which the class discusses and applies learning from self-paced modules developed by lead faculty.
* Grading assessments and providing verbal and written feedback to students as appropriate.
* Responding to student questions and issues related to the course.
* Maintaining regular communications with lead faculty and the coordinator for MPH@UNC about students' experiences, potential barriers, ideas for enhancement, etc.
Section instructors will follow a standardized course syllabus, class plan, and use pre-developed instructional materials created by lead faculty for each course. Instructors will effectively engage class members in discussions during live class sessions, bringing their unique background and expertise to the course experience by helping students apply their new knowledge to relevant, real-world problems. Section instructors will provide feedback on and grade student work, while also supporting student learning by establishing and communicating regular office hours and responding to student issues and questions within forty-eight business hours.
