Description
 The San Diego Symphony proudly operates two world-class venues in downtown San Diego: the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park as well as the Jacobs Music Center, an indoor concert hall recently reopened to the public after extensive renovations. The San Diego Symphony has a full event schedule including orchestral performances, presented programming without orchestra, performances for rental clients, and private events.
Position Summary:
The Video Head reports to the Director of Production, with a dotted line to the Video and Technical Directors and oversees the Video Department of the Jacobs Music Center within the context of the Collective Bargaining Agreements between San Diego Symphony Orchestra Association and IATSE Local 122. The Video Head works on all productions with video elements, supervising the implementation, operation, and maintenance of video equipment including but not limited to routing, projectors, cameras, LED walls, and any theatrical A/V elements. This position will perform the work and lead video crew members during load-ins, technical rehearsals, show runs, and loadouts. This Head Video must provide San Diego Symphony patrons with the best possible visual experience by providing engineering services as assigned in addition to implementing day to day leadership and supervision of the union video department.
This is a union stage crew role. Any successful candidate will be required to join IATSE Local 122 and fulfill membership requirements.
This is an hourly position (currently $46.07). The wages, conditions, and terms of which are governed by a Collective Bargaining Agreement with IATSE Local 122. It is expected that the successful candidate will make the San Diego Symphony his/her primary employment responsibility, and provide expertise, stability and continuity for our clients and organization.
All Department Heads will perform necessary duties for the proper completion of performances. A Department Head may perform tasks in other areas without regard to departmental distinction; however, it is understood that these tasks shall not interfere with the safe and professional execution of their primary responsibilities to the Employer as a head of department.
Requirements
Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises IATSE local 122 employees in the Video department and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Heads of Department are expected to anticipate department needs, follow through on projects and meet deadlines, engage and motivate other crew to achieve agreed outcomes. As leaders, Heads of Department should have the ability to think ahead and be self-sufficient in assessing and completing required tasks, including setting priorities, anticipating potential challenges and multitasking. All heads have a responsibility to manage personnel safety and uphold safety protocols within the department, including participating in all required training.
Key Position Responsibilities:
Operate and maintain all in-house video equipment, including, but not limited to projectors, projection screens, LED walls, video monitors, cameras, video consoles, cabling/connectors.
Troubleshoot and re-patch equipment in close proximity to artists on crowded stages, potentially in front of large audiences, and be able to maintain composure and professional demeanor.
Prepare and package equipment for RMA, including paperwork with vendors.
Calibrate and verify video systems at a high level.
Operate and troubleshoot backstage video systems.
Maintain, inspect, and repair accurate inventory of video equipment and supplies.
Maintain recorded video archives.
Set up and operate portable video systems where needed.
Coordinate and communicate with other San Diego Symphony video heads for different venues as needed to ensure all needs are anticipated and provided for.
Delegate to LED wall techs, directors, camera operators, engineers, V1s, prompters, graphics, projectionists, PTZ ops, shaders, or other relevant roles as assigned and serve as any of these positions as needed.
Assist with video captures as needed, confirming with Production Staff that all capture is approved in advance.
Coordinate the video department during load-in, performance, and load-out of all events and make sure the systems comply with both safety and aesthetics issues.
Assist Production Staff in technical advancement of shows when video will be involved in the show.
Assist in-house and outside video directors as needed.
Assess video rentals as needed for assigned shows.
Suggest and help Video and Technical Directors implement future video system upgrades and equipment purchases.
Work and communicate with other departments in the setting up of video equipment for various events.
Participate across production departments in planning and performing physical project work.
Ensure that internal and/or external communications are performed in a proficient and effective manner and contribute to the overall efficiency of the technical team.
Skills & Experience:
Extensive knowledge of theatrical video systems and their design, operation, and maintenance.
Knowledge of visual principles, color theory, and video engineering terminology is necessary.
Working knowledge of Ross, Blackmagic, and Bitfocus Companion systems preferred.
Ability to do multiple tasks simultaneously.
Knowledge of electrical systems and how they interact with video systems.
Ability to coordinate, direct, and supervise personnel.
Must have a keen eye to be able to see subtle problems in a video system and troubleshoot accordingly.
Ability to assess problems and resolve them effectively and efficiently quickly and accurately.
Excellent eye/hand coordination is necessary.
Knowledge of many types of cameras, routers, switchers, converters, computers, scalers, and their effective application.
RF knowledge as it relates to video.
Understanding of video streaming, codecs, software, control protocols, and tally.
Understanding of rigging, including ability to assist in or lead installation and maintenance of rigging systems for video.
Computer skills for operation of video control software and other computer applications.
Networking knowledge as it relates to video and video equipment.
Knowledge of industry-standard video systems and associated software.
Ability to learn new video and video system equipment as industry standards change.
OSHA certified, and consistent attention to safety, including reporting hazardous or unsafe conditions to supervisor.
Able to solve practical problems, including those unforeseen, and deal with limited resources under tight time limits.
Able to interpret a variety of instructions provided in writing, diagrams, and verbally.
Able to operate forklifts and man lifts.
Able to drive a 26' truck (preferred).
Proficient with Email, Windows, Microsoft Office, Google Drive. Experience with drawing programs (CAD, Vectorworks) would be an advantage.
Understanding and commitment to backstage etiquette, anticipate needs of musicians onstage.
Ability to multi-task and work effectively while managing multiple deadlines and priorities.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to resolve difficult and sensitive situations diplomatically and tactfully.
