Position Overview
We are looking for an organized, versatile team member who can effectively manage the flow of information through the KTAR News Desk while producing and delivering informative, up-to-the-minute news reports. This role will require you to be available for varied schedules. It's the perfect "foot in the door" opportunity for an up-and-comer or a great job for someone who just wants to keep their news chops fresh.
Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.
  • This position is an onsite role that requires the employee to regularly work at our Phoenix site.

What You Will Do:
Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:
  • Manage Daily News Content - Oversee, update, and maintain fresh, accurate news content for KTAR.com and KTAR News 92.3.
  • Monitor News Sources - Track scanners, wire services, social media, and partner outlets to identify developing stories and verify information.
  • Report and Produce Stories - Create written stories and provide audio (and sometimes video) for the newsroom with a strong multimedia mindset. Perform live in-studio reports during newscasts.
  • Pitch Story Ideas - Generate innovative and creative story concepts that align with KTAR's brand and coverage priorities.
  • Meet Deadlines - Complete projects and publish updates quickly and accurately in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Collaborate with Newsroom Staff - Work closely with reporters, editors, anchors, and other departments to ensure cohesive coverage and smooth workflow.
  • Maintain "Futures File" - collect news advisories and file them in the station's calendar for future coverage.
  • Edit Reporter Copy - Review scripts and written stories for accuracy, clarity, grammar, and consistency before publication or air.
  • Coordinate Breaking News Workflow - Direct reporters, anchors, and digital staff during urgent news situations to ensure fast, accurate, multi-platform coverage
  • Uphold Ethical Standards - Ensure all content meets journalistic ethics, including fairness, balance, attribution, and responsible sourcing.
  • Optimize Content for SEO - Write headlines, metadata, and story framing that improve search visibility without compromising editorial integrity.

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:
  • Bachelor's Degree in broadcast journalism or Associate's Degree.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as an active reporter, anchor or editor in a professional news environment.
  • Strong broadcast writing, and computer skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet up to the minute/hourly/daily/weekly deadlines and be accurate and precise in writing news or traffic reports.
  • Self-starter who can work though everyday tasks with minimal direction
  • Ability to understand and utilize news feeds and social media
  • Sound news judgement and ability to simplify press releases as well as government, and law enforcement information
  • Hold true to the utmost ethics in journalism and practice integrity in all areas, including professional and personal standards
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including conversational, yet professional news delivery.
  • Proficiency in editing audio using software like Audition or NewsBoss Audio Editor
  • NewsBoss platform experience preferred. Basic video editing skills preferred.
  • Strong desire to work at Arizona's largest and most respected award-winning news radio station.

Physical Demands
  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.

Compensation
$17.00 - $19.00 per hour. Hourly rate to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data.
