Role Description
The role of Vice President - Counsel, Americas Division, covering Privacy and Information Security law matters for Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) will work within the SMBC Legal Department and report to the Executive Director, Privacy and Information Security Counsel for the Americas Division. Majority of the coverage for this role will be privacy law, with related information security and artificial intelligence law.
Role Objectives
Primary responsibilities include:
  • Review, analysis, research, and counsel on existing and emerging privacy and information security laws and regulations;
  • Legal support and advising for the Americas Division data privacy framework, data transfer policies and agreements, data processing activities, and related global initiatives;
  • Review and advise on controls related to cross border data transfers and processing for technology policy documents and technology and third-party agreements;
  • Monitor briefings and communications from key regulators to advise on emerging themes in the privacy and information security space;
  • Provide ad hoc advice on privacy issues and escalate material issues and developments to senior attorneys and members of management;
  • Coordinate legal advice from outside counsel; and
  • Contribute to Legal Department initiatives and efforts as needed. Collaborate and coordinate with attorneys in the Legal Department for the Americas Division, and other internal partners across global teams to ensure adherence to institutional standards and policies.

Qualifications and Skills
  • Admission to and member of good standing with the New York or North Carolina bar.
  • 3 years minimum experience at a law firm or in-house legal department advising financial institutions on privacy and information security matters. Excellent legal, judgement, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to interpret and contextualize inquiries across the Firm, articulating complex concepts and ideas with practice, real-world application.
  • Creative problem-solving approach to complex issues, with an understanding of risk management.
  • Ability to prioritize and balance competing demands while protecting institutional interests.
  • Must be a team player able to work with designated department and business unit colleagues.
  • Demonstrated skills in communication, technical drafting, and issue-spotting.
  • Ability to work within tight timeframes on sensitive matters, operate comfortably in a professional environment with high expectations, and manage a significant workload with minimal supervision.
