AvalonBay Communities, Inc. (โ€œAvalonBayโ€ or the โ€œCompanyโ€) has engaged Major, Lindsey & Africa on an exclusive basis to conduct a search for a Vice President โ€“ Real Estate and Transactions Counsel or Senior Real Estate Counsel (depending on experience), to be based in Arlington, VA.

AvalonBay Communities, Inc., a member of the S&P 500, is an equity REIT that develops, redevelops, acquires and manages apartment communities in leading metropolitan areas in New England, the New York/New Jersey Metro area, the Mid-Atlantic, the Pacific Northwest, and Northern and Southern California, as well as in the Companyโ€™s expansion regions of Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, North Carolina, Southeast Florida, Dallas and Austin, Texas, and Denver, Colorado. As of September 30, 2025, the Company owned or held a direct or indirect ownership interest in 314 apartment communities containing 97,219 apartment homes in 11 states and the District of Columbia, of which 21 communities were under development.

Overview

This attorney helps manage and oversee legal matters related to AvalonBayโ€™s real estate and real estate investment activities, with a particular focus on acquisitions, dispositions, developments, redevelopments, joint ventures, structured investments, and other complex development and investment vehicles. This position will also provide advice to general questions and issues related to real estate matters and other legal issues, as appropriate.

Experience

At least 8+ (ideally more than 8) years of broad-based commercial real estate transactional experience obtained at a prominent law firm or sophisticated corporate legal department.

Location/Relocation

Arlington, VA. This is an in-office role requiring four days per week onsite, and local candidates are preferred.

Bar

Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, with an ability to obtain a corporate counsel license to practice in Virginia within the first year of employment.
