In alignment with Gift of Life Michigan's core purpose and core values, the Vice President, Performance Excellence/Patient Safety Officer provides expertise and analytical support to the organization to enhance and improve Gift of Life's ability to carry out its mission and serves as the OPTN designated Patient Safety Officer. This position will oversee vital data-driven initiatives and quality metrics for organ and tissue donation and safety events including the investigation and resulting improvements needed. The VP, Performance Excellence/Patient Safety Officer will oversee the strategic planning process and guide the organization in its path to ensure regulatory compliance with all federal, state, and local entities. This position is responsible for identifying opportunities for improvement and related process changes to affect growth in the mission.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe following job duties and responsibilities are stated in broad terms and are not intended to be inclusive.
- As a member of the senior leadership team, contribute to the development and execution of the organization's strategic plan.
- Develop a strategic vision for assigned division, in line with the organization's mission and vision. Be accountable for the achievement of the vision.
- Oversee the operations of assigned division, prioritize objectives, and implement strategies to achieve corporate goals and KPIs.
- Provide leadership to division directors and managers, including development of and accountability for performance.
- Serve as the OPTN designated Patient Safety Officer with direct reporting responsibilities to the Compliance Committee of the Governing Board.
- Monitoring and oversight of investigations of alleged patient safety events in real time
- Ensuring 24/7/365 coverage of patient safety reporting responsibilities
- Serving as the first point of contact for donor families, transplant patients, OPTN, hospital partners, HRSA and transplant partners regarding potential safety concerns or complaints.
- Oversee documentation of reported alleged safety incidents, complaints, near misses and adverse events to the President/CEO, Senior Leadership and the Compliance Committee of the Governing Board and the OPTN.
- Oversee root cause analyses and the oversight of correction actions and their implementation.
- Lead and oversee a culture of patient safety through training, transparency and continuous improvement.
- Work across all departments of the organization championing changes focused on improving performance, innovation, gaining efficiencies, and increasing productivity in support of the organization's mission.
- Lead and oversee the organization's strategic planning process.
- Provide change management expertise while working across all departments of the organization to champion performance driven changes.
- Leads organizational response to third party audits and surveys, ensuring the overall quality of services provided by the organization.
- Oversee the maintenance and enhancement of real time data models, including reporting, data analysis, alignment of data systems, and automation systems that track performance metrics, driving organizational innovation.
- Serve as Executive sponsor of the internal Performance Improvement Committee to monitor performance improvement projects across the organization.
- Drive collaboration across the organization to identify needs and develop scalable solutions.
- Develop positive work relationships with all levels of management and other departments.
- Represent Gift of Life through attendance at conferences and participation in local and national organizations and committees.
- Participate in peer-to-peer collaboration with other organ procurement organizations and partners for best practice sharing and learning.
- Oversee and advise on the development of policies and procedures for assigned division to ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
- Oversee the performance of assigned direct reports, set and communicate clear expectations, and provide coaching/guidance as necessary.
- Provide ongoing formal and informal performance feedback, conducting performance reviews and/or corrective action discussions as necessary.
- Support staff in setting performance goals and in furthering their professional development.
- Work with Human Resources to hire new employees and determine compensation levels for all assigned direct reports.
- Support the bi-directional communication of organizational and department messaging between leadership and staff.
- Promote a healthy and safe work environment.
- Manage other tasks required of supervisors such as time and attendance, staff change requests, and reporting.
- Master's degree in a science related field plus six years' experience in management or leadership role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience leading teams to the successful achievement of the organization's mission.

- Experience providing oversight, both direct and indirect, to multidisciplinary teams of varying sizes.
