Job description

Location: Foster City 

Vice President Controller 

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President-Controller has primary responsibility for the management of the organization's accounting department, including all aspects of corporate, development, property, resident services, and treasury functions. As the day-to-day operations leader for the accounting department, this position is responsible for implementing new accounting standards and procedures, ensuring compliance with existing accounting and agency regulations, instituting internal controls to minimize risks as well as the preparation of financial reports for annual audits, tax compliance, management, regulatory agencies, and the Board of Directors. The Vice President-Controller will coordinate the accounting activities with departments across the organization and ensure that all financial transactions / information / reports, policies, and procedures are in accordance with US GAAP standards and are accurately and timely submitted to management and regulatory agencies as required. 

Success in the role will be measured by consistent high-quality delivery of the job duties, successful mentoring of the accounting team, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to positively influence and interact at all levels of the organization within the framework of the MidPen mission and core values. 

Responsibilities: 

  • Directs the activities concerned with safekeeping, control, and accounting for assets and securities 
  • Directs and coordinates the organization's financial affairs according to financial principles and regulations 
  • Oversees all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems 
  • Ensures compliance with US GAAP, regulatory requirements, and MidPen standards, including all financial reporting obligations 
  • Develops and maintains policies and procedures of financial recordkeeping and reporting; maintains accounting internal controls and safeguards 
  • Directs the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, annual, and consolidated financial close processes 
  • Maintains inter-entity reconciliation and related financial recordkeeping processes to ensure compliance with accounting and control systems 
  • Reviews financial plans vs. actual results to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate 
  • Leads all audit and tax preparation activities and manages relationships with auditors and outsourced vendors 
  • Supports the CFO in engaging the Board and committees (Audit, Finance) on audit, tax, and financial results 
  • Oversees treasury, cash reporting, and tracks performance of invested assets in line with policies and guidelines 
  • Administers all aspects of new accounting technology implementation 
  • Manages, mentors, and develops a high-performing accounting team; leverages team strengths and clarifies roles and responsibilities 
  • Develops and implements training programs and promotes a positive, communicative, and supportive work environment 
  • Directly supervises treasury, Development Assistant Controller, and Property Assistant Controller; performs other duties as assigned 

Qualifications 

Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor's degree or Master's degree in accounting from an accredited university and 10 years of progressive accounting responsibility or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience 
  • Significant accounting leadership experience as a Controller or Senior Accounting Officer 
  • Experience within affordable housing/real estate industry preferred 
  • Certified Public Accounting (CPA) certification preferred 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Excellent oral, written, and communication skills 
  • Ability to clearly and effectively present information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management 
  • Advanced knowledge Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word 
  • Strong leadership and management skills with previous experience managing people, delegating workload, and providing direction/corrections as necessary 
  • Must have the ability to select, motivate, retain, coach, and develop a high-performing team 
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License, proof of current auto insurance, and reliable transportation

Pay Range 

$250,000.00 - $275,000.00 Annual Salary - Pay based on applicable experience and qualifications
