Overview
In this role, you will have the opportunity to provide advice on electronic discovery (eDiscovery) and data governance issues for a global financial services organization as a part of a team of seasoned attorneys and other professionals. You will provide legal guidance and counsel on the requirements, issues, best practices and technology solutions for all phases of the discovery process including collection and review, working with the attorneys in the Bank's Legal Department globally who handle litigations, regulatory enforcement matters, and other legal proceedings that include discovery-related activities. In addition to other lawyers in the Bank's Legal Department, you will also work closely with the Bank's Technology, Data and Innovation (TDI) function and the Bank's outside counsel and external technology and review service providers on eDiscovery requirements, best practices and technology solutions. To be successful, we are looking for professionals who are organized self-starters and team players. This role requires excellent judgment and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

What You'll Do
  • Provide practical and strategic guidance on eDiscovery legal requirements and issues to the Litigation and Regulatory Enforcement and HR Legal teams, as well as other attorneys in the Bank's Legal Department who handle litigation, regulatory enforcement matters and other legal proceedings globally that are or will be in discovery, with a particular focus on early case assessment, budget management, data collection scoping and strategies, data search and review strategies using the latest technology tools, ESI and discovery protocols, data production formats, and defensible disposal
  • Partner closely with the Bank's TDI function and records management groups on legal hold requirements and best practices for the identification, preservation and collection of data in ongoing and anticipated legal matters, as well as, advising on legal requirements and best practices for information governance and privacy concerns in an international context
  • Partner closely with the Bank's outside counsel and external eDiscovery technology and review service providers on best practices for the collection, search, review, and production of data in ongoing and anticipated legal matters, including AI and other technology solutions
  • Manage the Bank's external eDiscovery technology and review service providers, review and negotiate vendor pricing and contracts, create and maintain best practices and playbooks, and review and select technology tools and solutions
  • Provide practical and strategic advice on defensibility and eDiscovery legal requirements for new data types and systems
  • Provide input for managing future system implementation and data migration to improve the Bank's data retention, disposal, and transfer workflows as they relate to eDiscovery and Information Governance

How You'll Lead
  • Will gain extensive experience working on a broad range of eDiscovery and data related legal issues in matters globally, as well as broadening their overall legal expertise and getting exposure to the operation of a global investment bank
  • Provide advice to senior Legal Department management on legal eDiscovery requirements, best practices and technology tools and solutions
  • Collaborate with colleagues globally in the Bank's Legal Department, TDI function and other infrastructure functions

Skills You'll Need
  • Moderate experience advising on eDiscovery at a major law firm and/or in an in-house counsel role
  • Admission to the New York State Bar or otherwise qualified to practice law in New York as registered in-house counsel
  • Excellent judgment and ability to advise on legal risks and requirements within a business context
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proven ability to leverage AI tools to enhance productivity, optimize workflows to solve business problems, while applying critical judgment to ensure responsible and ethical use of data and AI outputs

Skills That Will Help You Excel
  • Prior in-house in or law firm experience with financial services is a plus
  • Ability to translate legal advice and requirements to IT professionals and other non-lawyers in a useable and practical manner, and ability vice-versa to translate IT issues and requirements to lawyers in a useable and practical manner
  • Ability to collaborate, cooperate and work well with others in a supportive and respectful manner
  • Ability to handle and strategically prioritize numerous projects and tasks
  • Experience operating in a fast-paced business environment

Expectations
It is the Bank's expectation that employees hired into this role will work in either the New York or Washington DC office in accordance with the Bank's hybrid working model.

The salary range for this position in New York City and Washington DC is $170,000 to $275,500. Actual salaries may be based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's skill set, experience, education, work location and other qualifications.
