Job description

Under the general supervision of the Older Adult Program supervisor, the Peer Specialist performs assigned peer support activities in the Older Adult Program office and community at large.  Specifically, this worker provides recovery-oriented peer services to older adult mental health consumers.  These services involve utilization of the Peer Specialist's own experiences in recovery to engage and inspire hope in working with mental health consumers.  The Peer Specialist is a skilled member of the recovery team participating in all aspects of the consumer's recovery.  The staff is directly responsible to the Older Adult Program Supervisor.  
Experience and Training
  • This position requires graduation from a standard high school or GED.
  • The Peer Coordinator must have been treated in a behavioral health system for at least one year and have a level of stability and recovery that facilitates participation in the treatment and recovery of other mental health consumers.
  • Previous experience in working with older adults is beneficial.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the Peer Support Code of Ethics (developed by Via Hope) is essential to this position, as these requirements guide all aspects of peer services.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team approach with other Older Adult Mental Health Program staff  to foster a culture of recovery.
  • Must demonstrate  an ability to engage mental health consumers to participate in and take charge of their own recovery.
  • Ability to work effectively with the older adult  population and to increase knowledge of specific needs to the older adult population.
  • Must complete the Peer Specialist training for continued employment.
  • Must have and maintain a level of general physical and mental health that permits the performance of job duties. 
  • Must be able to perform unaided or with reasonable accommodation, the essential tasks, both in the classroom as well as on the job, CPR/First Aid, and PMAB.
  • Must be able to travel 100% of the time.
  • Valid driver's license and auto insurance is a must.
Hours: Flexible, Mon-Fri 20 hours/week
