Job description

Summary

VA NWIHCS is an integrated system that serves more than 56,000 Veterans in 99 counties in Nebraska, western Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, including a tertiary medical center in Omaha, clinics in Lincoln and Grand Island, community living centers, and community‐based outpatient clinics.

Eligibility

Open to U.S. Citizens, Nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. Non‑citizens may be appointed when no qualified citizens are available.

Duties
  • Perform eye care and ancillary testing with full exercise of credentials and clinical privileges.
  • Consider patient age and functional capacity when providing care, providing objective self‑assessment and education.
  • Enter accurate, complete, timely progress notes for each episode of care into the electronic record.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and maintain standards for reprocessing reusable medical equipment (RME).
  • Ensure proper use, maintenance, and calibration of specialized equipment used in patient assessment and care.
  • Adhere to safety, health, and infection control standards, report unsafe conditions to supervisor or appropriate officials.
  • Assist in training new staff and provide patient and family education, including informed consent.
  • Participate in teaching of medical students rotating through VANWIHCS.
Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

This position is not a telework or virtual role.

Requirements
  • All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; non‑citizens may be appointed if no qualified citizens are available.

  • Selective Service registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.

  • Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is required for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel.
  • Complete all application requirements detailed in the "Required Documents" section.
  • May be required to serve a probationary period; a 2‑year probationary period will be evaluated for fitness and public interest. Upon completion, employment will continue only if certified to advance the public interest.
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited school approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) for the year of completion.
  • Current, full, unrestricted optometry license and registration in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
  • Completed a VA‑approved residency in optometry, or have at least two years of licensed clinical optometric practice involving medically complex patients.
  • Ability to provide accurate, complete progress notes and maintain equipment standards.
Physical Requirements

Applicants will be asked to participate in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination.
