Venue Assistant information
What is a venue assistant?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a venue assistant, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges venue assistants face during large events, and how can they be managed effectively?
What is the difference between Venue Assistant vs Event Coordinator?
| Aspect | Venue Assistant | Event Coordinator |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | High school diploma or equivalent; some roles may require certifications in hospitality or customer service | Bachelor's degree in hospitality, event management, or related field; certifications like CMP are a plus |
| Work Environment | Indoor venues such as conference centers, theaters, or sports arenas; supporting event setup and operations | Office and on-site at various event locations; planning, coordinating, and overseeing event execution |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Event venues, hotels, community centers; entry-level support roles | Event planning companies, corporate event departments, wedding venues; managerial and planning responsibilities |
While both roles support events, a Venue Assistant primarily handles logistical support and setup within the venue, whereas an Event Coordinator manages the overall planning, coordination, and execution of events. The Venue Assistant role is more hands-on and operational, often serving as an entry point into the event industry, while the Event Coordinator has broader responsibilities and often requires more experience and planning skills.

Responsibilities include performing a wide range of installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance duties in compliance with safety protocols and predictive maintenance systems, ensuring alignment with the theatre's operational and business goals. As our Venue Maintenance Technician, you'll be the behind-the-scenes hero who ensures our facility is always event-ready. Your work will directly impact the comfort, safety, and enjoyment of thousands of guests, performers, and staff. Whether it's fixing a lighting fixture before showtime or ensuring a backstage toilet is in working order, you'll be the go-to problem solver, and "eyes" of the venue, who keeps the magic alive.
WHAT THIS ROLE WILL DO
- Inspect, repair, and replace venue seating - from tightening bolts to replacing upholstery or damaged components.
- Maintain and repair restroom fixtures, including toilets, urinals, sinks, faucets, and flush mechanisms.
- Perform facility repairs including carpentry, painting, and drywall patching/finishing.
- Handle basic electrical repairs, such as replacing light fixtures, switches, outlets, and troubleshooting minor wiring issues.
- Maintain an organized inventory of repair parts, tools, and supplies - tracking usage and reordering before stock runs low.
- Keep accurate records of repairs, recurring issues, and needed upgrades
- Perform preventive maintenance to reduce breakdowns during events.
- Respond quickly to urgent/unscheduled repair of venue facilities during (or between) events to minimize downtime.
- Set up and break down event-related equipment, from staging and seating to signage and safety barriers.
- Maintain cleanliness and safety in backstage, public, and staff areas, including the storage room, and assist with other deep cleaning duties as assigned.
- Coordinate with event managers, custodial staff, and external contractors to ensure smooth operations.
- Perform all other duties as assigned or needed.
- Pay rate: $20 - $25/hr
WHAT THIS PERSON WILL BRING
- 2+ years of experience in facility, building, or venue maintenance (or equivalent hands-on skills).
- Working knowledge of basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and mechanical systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems quickly under pressure.
- Comfort working evenings, weekends, and holidays as repair schedules require.
- A proactive, team-oriented mindset and pride in delivering a great guest experience.
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. and work on ladders or in tight spaces when needed.
- Must be highly motivated and able to work independently.
