Position Overview
NASA SEWP is seeking a User Experience and Interface Design Specialist to optimize the usability, accessibility, and effectiveness of NASA SEWP's web applications. This role will work closely with users, product owners, business analysts, software engineers, quality assurance testers, and other stakeholders to ensure application design decisions are grounded in user needs, business objectives, and technical feasibility.
The role will support the full design lifecycle, including user research, workflow analysis, requirements refinement, wireframing, prototyping, usability and accessibility review, and coordination with development teams to translate approved designs into effective front-end solutions.
Core Responsibilities
The User Experience and Interface Design Specialist is responsible for:
  • Understanding User Needs and Business Context. Working with stakeholders, product owners, business analysts, and end users to understand user goals, operational workflows, pain points, and business requirements.
  • Designing Effective User Experiences. Creating user flows, wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and interface designs that support efficient, intuitive, and consistent user interactions.
  • Supporting Accessibility and Usability. Ensuring designs consider usability best practices, accessibility requirements, Section 508 requirements, and inclusive design principles.
  • Collaborating Across Product and Technical Teams. Partnering with development, testing, product, and infrastructure teams to ensure designs are technically feasible, clearly understood, and implemented as intended.
  • Maintaining Design Consistency. Supporting consistent use of design patterns, interface standards, terminology, navigation, and visual presentation across NASA SEWP's web applications.
  • Translating Requirements into Interface Designs. Converting business and functional requirements into practical design solutions that are understandable to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Reviewing Implemented Functionality. Participating in design and Sprint reviews, usability walkthroughs, and validation activities to confirm that implemented features align with approved designs and user expectations.
  • Supporting Continuous Improvement. Identifying opportunities to improve user workflows, reduce complexity, enhance clarity, and improve the overall user experience over time.

Minimum Requirements
Qualified candidates will have solid experience in:
  • Designing user interfaces for enterprise, government, or large-scale business applications.
  • Creating wireframes, mockups, prototypes, user flows, and design specifications.
  • Designing front-end web interfaces that comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and other applicable Federal website requirements.
  • Leveraging common design and prototyping tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Axure, or similar tools.
  • Effectively balancing competing user needs, business requirements, technical constraints, and delivery timelines.
  • Working in an Agile development environment, including translating user and stakeholder input into user stories and acceptance criteria.

In addition, qualified candidates will possess:
  • 5-10 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Strong understanding of UX principles, UI design practices, usability, and human-centered design.
  • Ability to work effectively with business stakeholders, technical teams, testers, and product owners.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain design decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • US Citizenship or permanent residency, with ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance
  • Ability to work on-site in Greenbelt, Maryland a minimum of three (3) days per week.
