About the role- The Manager, UX Design leads and develops a team of designers while defining and driving UX strategy across the business. This role champions human-centered design principles, guides the team in modern UX practices, and is accountable for hiring, coaching, and growing talent to deliver impactful, user-focused solutions. The Manager, UX Design leads a UX design team responsible for delivering intuitive and accessible experiences across Elsevier's Clinical Solutions portfolio, including clinical decision support, competency management, and patient engagement tools.

About the team; This high-performing team of UX designers and researchers is support our most critical products in the Health Markets space.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partnering closely with Product, Engineering, Data Science, and Clinical stakeholders, and plays a key role in integrating AI-driven experiences responsibly and effectively into our products.
  • Defining and evolving the UX vision and strategy aligned to Clinical Solutions business goals and user needs.
  • Leading, coaching, and growing a high-performing team of UX designers and researchers. Coach teams on designing for human-AI collaboration, including confidence, control, and feedback loops.
  • Hire, mentor, and develop UX talent across skill levels. Foster a culture of inclusion, continuous learning, and design excellence. Provide regular feedback, career development guidance, and performance coaching. Ensure the team has the tools, training, and support needed to succeed.
  • Setting the standards for user experience, champions human-centered and data-informed design practices and ensures the team delivers high-impact outcomes that improve clinical workflows and patient outcomes.
  • Establishing modern UX practices, including continuous discovery, iterative delivery, and outcome-based measurement. Advocating for user-centered design at all levels of the organization.
  • Driving adoption of design systems and consistent interaction patterns across products.
  • Ensuring teams deeply understand clinical, educational, and patient user needs through continuous research and validation.
  • Championing inclusive design practices, ensuring accessibility (WCAG compliance and beyond) is embedded throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Translating research insights into actionable product and design decisions.

Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in UX design, with 2+ years in people leadership.
  • Proven track record of delivering impactful, user-centered digital products.
  • Experience working in complex, regulated, or data-rich environments (e.g., healthcare or education).

AI-Driven Experience Design

  • Experience leading UX strategy for AI-enabled features (e.g., clinical decision support, recommendations, generative experiences). Ensure responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI in user experiences.
  • Experience partnering with Product, Data Science, and Engineering to design explainable, trustworthy AI interactions.

Technical & Domain Expectations

  • Deep understanding of modern UX methodologies (e.g., design thinking, Lean UX, Jobs-to-be-Done). Experience with design systems and scalable UX frameworks.
  • Familiarity with healthcare or clinical workflows is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG) and inclusive design principles.
  • Experience designing AI/ML-powered products and data-driven interfaces.
  • Proficiency with modern design and collaboration tools (e.g., Figma, AI-prototyping tools, research platforms).

U.S. National Base Pay Range: $118,300 - $219,800. Geographic differentials may apply in some locations to better reflect local market rates. If performed in New York, the base pay range is $130,200 - $241,800.If performed in New York City, the base pay range is $142,000 - $263,800.If performed in Rochester, NY, the base pay range is $118,300 - $219,800.If performed in New Jersey, the base pay range is $149,765 - $239,235. This job is eligible for an annual incentive bonus.
