Job description
Another Source’s client, the University of Pittsburgh, is recruiting an Executive Director of the University Counseling Center to join their team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This role is in-person, with flexible work arrangements (hybrid) as operationally appropriate.
Here’s a little about the University of Pittsburgh:Â
The University of Pittsburgh is one of the nation’s leading public research universities and a proud member of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Located in Pittsburgh’s vibrant Oakland neighborhood, Pitt is nationally recognized for academic excellence, groundbreaking research, and its commitment to student success and well-being.Â
Within the Division of Student Affairs, the University has made a deep institutional commitment to holistic student wellness — recognizing the important connection between mental health, belonging, resilience, learning, and long-term student success. The University Counseling Center (UCC) plays a central role in this mission through collaborative partnerships across Student Affairs, Student Health Services, campus safety, academic units, and community providers.Â
This is an opportunity to join a university that values innovation, collaboration, and student-centered leadership while helping shape the future of collegiate mental health at a pivotal moment for higher education.Â
About this role:Â
The University of Pittsburgh seeks a collaborative, emotionally intelligent, and clinically grounded leader to serve as the next Executive Director of the University Counseling Center (UCC). Reporting to the Executive Associate Dean and Chief Wellness Officer, this leader will guide one of the University’s most important student support resources during a period of significant opportunity and evolution within collegiate mental health.Â
The Executive Director will lead a highly skilled and deeply committed multidisciplinary team responsible for counseling services, crisis intervention, outreach, prevention programming, consultation, embedded clinical services, and training programs. This role is equally operational, strategic, and relational — balancing high-quality student-centered care with sustainable clinical operations, organizational culture, and staff well-being.Â
The University is seeking a leader who can build trust authentically, foster transparency and collaboration, and thoughtfully guide the center’s continued growth while preserving the strong clinical expertise and collegial culture already in place.Â
Scope & ImpactÂ
- Provide strategic, operational, and clinical leadership for the University Counseling Center within a large public research university environment Â
- Lead and support a multidisciplinary team of therapists, psychologists, social workers, trainees, and embedded clinicians Â
- Foster a culture grounded in trust, transparency, accountability, collaboration, and psychological safety Â
- Strengthen organizational communication, role clarity, and shared understanding across teams Â
- Balance student access and responsiveness with sustainable clinical practice and clinician well-being Â
- Oversee departmental operations including staffing, budgeting, workflow management, assessment, and reporting Â
- Ensure compliance with ethical, legal, accreditation, and professional standards, including IACS, AUCCCD, and CCMH participation Â
- Advance integrated approaches to student wellness through collaboration with Student Affairs, Student Health Services, Care and Resource Support, campus safety, and academic partners Â
- Utilize assessment, operational insight, and data-informed decision-making to support strategic planning and continuous improvement Â
- Serve as a visible and trusted campus leader and advocate for student mental health and well-being Â
- Contribute as a divisional leader within Student Affairs, helping advance broader initiatives related to student success, belonging, engagement, and wellness Â
QualificationsÂ
- Earned degree in psychology, counseling, social work, or a related mental health field (doctoral degree preferred)Â Â
- 7+ years of relevant clinical experience and licensure (or license eligibility)Â Â
- Progressive leadership experience within a university counseling center, higher education mental health setting, or similarly complex clinical environment Â
- Experience supervising clinicians and multidisciplinary teams Â
- Strong operational, administrative, and financial management experience Â
- Demonstrated ability to build trust, foster collaboration, and lead through complexity and organizational change Â
- Commitment to ethical, student-centered care and inclusive excellence Â
- Strong communication, relationship-building, and emotional intelligence skills Â
- Experience balancing clinical excellence, operational effectiveness, and organizational culture Â
- Understanding of the relationship between student well-being, learning, belonging, and student success Â
- Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and campus stakeholders Â
- Cultural humility and demonstrated ability to lead within diverse environments Â
What’s in it for you:Â
The anticipated salary range for this position is $130,000–$140,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications. in person, with flexible work arrangements (hybrid) as operationally appropriate
