Job description

Job Summary:
The Unit Secretary is responsible for the secretarial aspects of patient care and the environmental management of the work unit. He/she is also delegated assignments by the RN related to direct patient care. She/he functions directly under the supervision of the Patient Care Coordinator and is directly accountable to the Patient Care Manager. The Monitor Technician performs under the direct supervision of the PCM, and is delegated assignments, to achieve quality patient care. He/she is involved in the implementation phase of the nursing process and is responsible to the PCM of the Central Monitor Station. He/she is responsible for observing and reporting patient heart rhythms while working under the guidelines of the monitor room. The duties described are not all inclusive and other duties may be assigned as circumstances warrant.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide reliable assistance to the members of the team including nurses, manager, and physicians. Demonstrates good customer service skills when interacting with patients, visitors, and co-workers. Helps ensure that the unit runs efficiently.
  • Demonstrates technical aptitude for performing secretarial and general unit duties.
  • Demonstrates technical aptitude for operating telephone, fax, scanner, label printer, and computer.
  • Demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, visitors & the whole health care team.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide technical care appropriate to the age of the patients served; also demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and possesses the ability to collect data and relays appropriate data to nurse, status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age specific needs, and to provide the care needed.

  • Demonstrates ability to perform all technical skills required for each unit's population by rendering professional care including obtaining blood sugars, restraints, suicide precautions, bathing, dressing, ambulating, and feeding patients.
  • Demonstrates technical aptitude for working, troubleshooting, and assisting the nurse with multiples pieces of equipment used for patient care including but not limited to telemetry monitoring devices and blood glucose monitoring.
  • Demonstrates the aptitude for safely positioning and/or assisting the nurse to safely position the patient using a variety of devices such as but not limited to abduction pillows, splints, slings, braces, neck collars, walkers, crutches, immobilizers, and specialty beds.
  • Communicates effectively with others in an appropriate and timely manner. Adheres to and promotes established values of the organization, i.e. customer service, safety, infection control and compliance standards.
  • Consistently follows patient care and FGH policy, procedures and standards of care in performing duties
  • Perform any other job duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education/Skills:
High School Diploma/GED required. Completion of an approved Nurse Aide training course preferred. Successful completion of Monitor Tech course at FGH and completion of forty hours of training with a current Monitor Tech required. Must pass the post test for Rhythm Identification Competency prior to functioning independently in the Centralized Monitor Room. Successful completion of secretarial orientation and required health stream modules.
Work Experience:
Computer experience preferred but not required.
