Job description

The Network Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and ongoing ownership of the organization’s network infrastructure, including internet connectivity, IP telephony, and WAN/LAN environments. This role is accountable for ensuring network performance, reliability, and security through proactive monitoring, continuous improvement, and timely issue resolution. 

The Network Engineer plays a key role in disaster recovery planning and testing and is expected to take full ownership of network-related outcomes, driving accountability for uptime, stability, and secure operations. This is a full-time position with schedule flexibility to support maintenance, upgrades, and incident response outside of standard business hours.


Network Administration

  • Own the design, implementation, and lifecycle management of enterprise WAN and LAN environments, including switches, routers, and network infrastructure components.
  • Engineer, deploy, and maintain highly available network solutions that meet or exceed established uptime and performance standards for the credit union.
  • Take full accountability for internet connectivity, proactively identifying risks and ensuring continuous, reliable access across all locations.
  • Design, implement, and support secure VPN solutions for remote access, ensuring alignment with access control and security policies.
  • Proactively monitor network performance, capacity, and system logs; investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues with a focus on root cause and long-term stability.
  • Own and continuously improve network security posture, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and segmentation strategies.
  • Plan and execute hardware, firmware, and software updates to address vulnerabilities, maintain compliance, and minimize operational risk.
  • Conduct and document regular firewall rule reviews, ensuring accountability for accuracy, removal of unauthorized changes, and ongoing risk mitigation.

Business Continuity and Recovery

  • Own network availability across the enterprise, proactively monitoring and responding to outages in alignment with credit union policies and recovery objectives.
  • Develop, maintain, and take full accountability for execution of the network communications disaster recovery plan, ensuring readiness at all times.
  • Lead coordination with third-party providers and vendors during disaster recovery events, ensuring timely restoration of network services and clear communication.
  • Plan, execute, and document regular disaster recovery and network failover testing; track results, drive remediation efforts, and ensure continuous improvement of recovery capabilities.
  • Own the integrity and availability of network backups by ensuring successful completion of nightly processes and maintaining up-to-date configurations for all network devices, with accountability for recoverability and compliance.

Documentation and Operations Support

  • Own and maintain all network-related documentation, ensuring procedures, configurations, and standards are accurate, current, and updated as changes occur.
  • Develop and maintain detailed as-built and configuration documentation for all network systems, taking accountability for completeness and operational readiness.
  • Create and continuously update comprehensive network diagrams across all branches, departments, and data centers, ensuring clear visibility into LAN/WAN connectivity.
  • Maintain full ownership of network asset inventory, including hardware, software versions, access, contract renewals, and lifecycle/replacement planning.
  • Proactively identify, document, and drive remediation of network bottlenecks and single points of failure to improve performance and resilience.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support IT operations and organizational goals.

Education and/or Experience:

  • High school diploma required. College degree in Information Technology or a related field preferred.
  • 4+ years of experience in network administration or related field required.
  • Preferred Certifications: CCNP Enterprise, CCNA Security, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA CySA+

Abilities:

  • Ability to evaluate complex infrastructure environments, identify root cause and contributing factors, and determine the most effective path to resolution. Must be able to assess risk, performance, capacity, and resiliency impacts, and make decisions that balance security, reliability, scalability, cost, and operational supportability.
  • Ability to document systems and procedures in a clear and comprehensive manner.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
