Job description

Under the direction of the Director of the Center for Demographic Research (CDR), the GIS Analyst will develop, maintain, and utilize a comprehensive GIS, as well as perform demographic analysis to support the activities of the CDR. This position has a 9/80 Alternative Work Schedule (AWS). CDR is closed every other Friday.

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst's primary function is to design, compile, analyze, and prepare geographic data; investigate and analyze alternative methods of obtaining geographic data from a variety of sources; and to deliver the results of geographic analysis to users. The CDR is a non-profit research center located at Cal State Fullerton that is dedicated to the development and support of demographic research. Essential Duties Creates and maintains standard and custom GIS data, metadata, layers, maps, interactive maps, and services.

Coordinates with local, state, and regional agencies to acquire and maintain maps, boundary files and demographic databases, and integrate them into a GIS and CDR reports. Develops applications using a variety of platforms and software, including ArcGIS Pro 3.x+, and ArcGIS Online. Prepares and reviews demographic analysis and cartographically pleasing maps utilizing GIS

Performs geospatial data analysis resulting in maps, applications, reports, and/or models. Converts data received from internal and external sources to make them usable in the GIS system; conducts research as needed to verify and document external source data. Researches and inputs map and attribute data to construct geographic information systems; verifies accuracy and correctness of data sources.

Maintains and verifies existing data; works in cooperation with staff to maintain accuracy of data. Performs quality assurances measures, including topology edits and tabular data prep. Assists in the preparation of proposals and delivery of work programs in response to RFPs and solicitation for services.

Develops and implements project work programs, maintains technical and program progress, and ensures project is completed in accordance to guidelines. Keeps accurate and current accounting records. Creates and maintains project and technical documentation.

Maintains mastery of modern GIS principles and technologies. Provides technical assistance to CDR users in new and existing GIS software and applications. Writes procedures for utilizing GIS software and applications.

Troubleshoots CDR GIS software in conjunction with campus IT support. Makes recommendations on upgrades and system improvements related to GIS. Presents findings to management and technical advisory groups and agencies contracting for CDR services.

Some local travel is required. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications At least one and a half (1.5) years of demonstrable, progressively responsible GIS experience operating, maintaining, and implementing automated mapping and/or geographic information systems that would have applied or developed the required knowledge and abilities listed herein, including geocoding

Working knowledge of Esri ArcGIS Pro 3.x+. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of principles and practices of GIS and cartography, including graphic design, data management, and analysis; relational database management systems and principles

Excellent project management and organization skills, as well as a detail-oriented work approach. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook and database and spreadsheet management (Excel and/or Access). Ability to work independently and in a group environment.

Ability to handle multiple priorities and projects within tight deadlines and maintain accuracy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers, members of other departments and agencies, and deal with the public in a courteous manner. Familiar with U.S

Census Bureau products, such as data.census.gov data sets. Experience with conducting demographic analysis desired. Experience with GIS programming and deploying online interactive mapping services desired

EDUCATION: Minimum Bachelor's degree in GIS, geography, environmental science, computer science, demography, or a related field, with training in GIS. GIS degree, GIS certificate, and/or Master's degree preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged sitting in front of computer.
